Instructor: Dennis Lake
Instructor Bio: DENNIS C. LAKE grew up in Detroit and was recognized early as a student who showed a talent for things artistic. He earned his BFA from Wayne State University and started working as an art director for a decorating firm. However, the Viet Nam War interrupted, and for the next twenty years he flew as a pilot for the USAF. His world-wide travels enriched his love of Fine Art, and when he retired in Tennessee, he returned to school for his Masters in Art Education. While teaching visual arts in high school and college, he began painting and exhibiting in the Middle Tennessee region. President of the Mid-Cumberland Art League, numerous awards in juried shows, commissions for murals and portraits, selected as a gilder for Nashville's Athena project are but a few of his accomplishments. After moving to the Low Country, he began teaching at the Hilton Head Art League Academy and the Society of Bluffton Artists in 2009. Dennis is currently an exhibiting artist at Art League of Hilton Head and the Society of Bluffton Artists where he has been a featured artist. He takes great delight in observing and interpreting the world we live in, often with an eye for intricate detail and subtle colors. Many of his landscape paintings are easily identifiable as area locations. In addition, still life, portraiture, animal life are frequent subject matter and are presented in his unique but traditionally realistic style as well as showing his versatility in paint mediums.

Instructor: Jami Wright
Instructor Bio: An artist at heart, JAMI WRIGHT has always gravitated toward trying anything creative. Her formal training is that of a graphic designer, where she employed various creative skills to serve her clients, including photography and copy writing. Since her advertising work revolved around the needs of her clients and was often limited by their vision, Jami turned to other creative outlets in her free time. She took a hand building class at a local art center and never looked back. She wanted to learn to throw clay, so she bought a wheel and set up a work space in her home and LITERALLY began slinging clay all over the walls. After years of practice throwing, she began using hand building techniques to modify wheel thrown forms into unique pieces of art. Never one to stop learning and always yearning to try something new, Jami took a metal smith workshop with an artist in Tampa and began hand-forging copper and silver into unique pieces of jewelry. With another skill in her creative toolbox, she began merging media by adding metal elements to her finished clay pieces. She eventually began creating events for advertising clients that coordinated with their marketing campaigns and participated in planning the food and decor. One thing led to another. She enrolled in culinary school and began using her pottery skills to manipulate fondant into tiny works of edible art. Once you learn an art form, a new technique or a new skill, an artist has an ever expanding ability to manifest an idea into reality. Never stop learning. Never stop growing. Be willing to try something new. Jami has experience teaching art to both children and adults through various art galleries and associations, as well as in the public school system. She owned The Funky Mermaid Art Gallery and Gift Boutique in Monroe, Georgia where she also offered art and pottery classes. Her culinary internship focused on teaching culinary at Lanier College Career Academy, an alternative high school program where students explore career alternatives!

Instructor: Kathy Oda
Instructor Bio: Hindsight tells KATHY ODA that her teen years were a time of being young and silly. She spent her 20s taking chances and making mistakes without always being aware of the consequences. Kathy's 30s were to understand the long-ranging consequences of her actions, take calculated risks and to find herself. Her 40s were a time to relish in making mistakes, redefine the rules and to truly enjoy who she is. And her 50s are turning out to be a thoroughly enjoyable journey. As part of her self-discovery years, Kathy dabbled in various artistic endeavors but nothing stuck. And then she took a glass blowing class and fell in love. The heat, the technique, learning the properties of glass captured her imagination. For Kathy, glass was and still is, extremely sensuous. The way one can manipulate it but still respect the properties of the glass just fascinates her. She blew glass for a while but at the time, setting up a studio in her home was out of the question so she turned to kiln-formed glass. And let's face it, She was not very good. Kathy found a mentor in Denver and started to hone her technique. Over the last 20+ years, as she moved to Charlotte and then settled in Beaufort, Kathy has worked at growing her craft and is thoroughly enjoying herself as part of the journey. Because, like Kathy says, above all else, it has to be fun! Working with glass has fired Kathy's imagination to the point that she dreams in color and patterns. She's also mightily inspired by her surroundings and her work also has a botanical theme with mono printed leaf prints in most of her glasswork. Kathy is in a growth period now and is branching out in a new direction. She faces a super steep learning curve but is having a lot of fun! She says she loves what she does and is passionate about the current direction of her work. We hope you enjoy it as well!

Painting in a Blue Mood LIVE ONLINE DEMO with Alex Sharma

WHEN: Friday, October 22, 2021 (10am to 11:30am EST) Blue is an iconic color often associated with water and the sky. Blue can also indicate “mood”—as in, tranquil, time of day, place, season, feelings, etc. Through the various subject matter, Alex will demonstrate how to use blue in all its many variations to convey mood. These variations include how to change blue with other colors, how to get blue to approach or recede to create distance, use of value to obtain impact, and how to use blue in an arbitrary way to create interest. Alex will demonstrate in watercolor; however, the methods and considerations are the same for all paint media. Come prepared to paint in your medium of choice.
