The NOEL FREIDLINE QUARTET with MARIA HOWELL: “Old Devil Moon” CD RELEASE

MARIA HOWELL and NOEL FREIDLINE just released their first collaborative CD, “Old Devil Moon.”
The CD features saxophonist JUAN ROLLAN, bassist BILLY THORNTON and drummer AL SERGEL.
On September 7 & 8, 2018, this same group of musicians will take the stage at The Jazz Corner to celebrate and introduce their newest recording. Maria and the quartet will be performing songs from the new CD as well as selections from a recent special project featuring the music of Carole King, Karen Carpenter and Carly Simon.
Best known for her role as the choir soloist in the 1985 Oscar-nominated film The Color Purple, Maria Howell is the perfect combination of artistry and entertainment. She has an innate ability to establish “instant rapport” with an audience. A Gastonia, NC native, now residing in Los Angeles, Howell has been known to leave audiences mesmerized with her powerful, sultry, smooth voice, mixing R&B, gospel and soul into her renditions of jazz classics.
As an actress Howell has appeared in the feature films The Color Purple, The Hunger Games, The Blind Side, and the Academy Award nominated Hidden Figures as well TV’s “Revolution,” “Devious Maids,” and “Saints and Sinners.” As a vocalist Maria has shared the stage with Ray Charles, Najee, George Howard, Ramsey Lewis, George Benson, Nancy Wilson, lyricist Tim Rice and Marvin Hamlisch among others.
As the leader of the Noel Freidline Quintet for the last 26 years, Freidline has recorded 8 CDs, performed at jazz festivals as diverse as the Jacksonville (FL) Jazz Festival to the Bethlehem (PA) Musikfest to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, served as artistic director for the Columbia Museum of Art jazz concert series, Jazz on Main, launched a new jazz concert series in Jacksonville, FL called Jazz with Noel Freidline and Friends, held down a three-year house band position at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and performed for actress Julia Roberts’ surprise 35th birthday party.
