Featured Poet: John Hoppenthaler
John Hoppenthaler’s books of poetry are Night Wing Over Metropolitan Area, Domestic Garden, Anticipate the Coming Reservoir, and Lives of Water, all with Carnegie Mellon UP. He has co-edited a volume of essays on the poetry of Jean Valentine, This-World Company (U of Michigan P). A Professor of English at East Carolina University, his poetry and essays appear in Ploughshares, Virginia Quarterly Review, TriQuarterly, Southern Review, Poetry Northwest, New York Magazine, Blackbird, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, and many other journals and anthologies.
Warm-up Poet: Deidre Johns
Deidre Garr Johns has two books out in the last year: Fallen Love, a poetry collection that explores the ways love builds, breaks, and restores the spirit; and Weathering the Storm, a children’s book about friendship and bravery. Johns lives on Hilton Head Island, has taught at Hilton Head High School, and her work can be found on the Hilton Head Poetry Trail.
Musicians: Ty Miller and Don Moxley
Ty Miller, an accomplished vocalist and guitar player from Bluffton, plays solo regularly at ELA’s, Calhoun’s, and the RV Resort. He’s the head vocalist for Burnt Church Revival.
Don Moxley, on dobro, can be found playing the pedal steel guitar for several area bands, including Burnt Church Revival with Ty. He logged 40 years in the Charleston music scene and was named to the Lowcountry Hall of Fame in 2018.
