Instructor Bio: | Hindsight tells KATHY ODA that her teen years were a time of being young and silly. She spent her 20s taking chances and making mistakes without always being aware of the consequences. Kathy’s 30s were to understand the long-ranging consequences of her actions, take calculated risks and to find herself. Her 40s were a time to relish in making mistakes, redefine the rules and to truly enjoy who she is. And her 50s are turning out to be a thoroughly enjoyable journey. As part of her self-discovery years, Kathy dabbled in various artistic endeavors but nothing stuck. And then she took a glass blowing class and fell in love. The heat, the technique, learning the properties of glass captured her imagination. For Kathy, glass was and still is, extremely sensuous. The way one can manipulate it but still respect the properties of the glass just fascinates her. She blew glass for a while but at the time, setting up a studio in her home was out of the question so she turned to kiln-formed glass. And let’s face it, She was not very good.Kathy found a mentor in Denver and started to hone her technique. Over the last 20+ years, as she moved to Charlotte and then settled in Beaufort, Kathy has worked at growing her craft and is thoroughly enjoying herself as part of the journey. Because, like Kathy says, above all else, it has to be fun! Working with glass has fired Kathy’s imagination to the point that she dreams in color and patterns. She’s also mightily inspired by her surroundings and her work also has a botanical theme with mono printed leaf prints in most of her glasswork. Kathy is in a growth period now and is branching out in a new direction. She faces a super steep learning curve but is having a lot of fun! She says she loves what she does and is passionate about the current direction of her work. We hope you enjoy it as well! |
