Oils and Acrylics” Obtaining Luminance and Transparency with Alex Sharma
Imagine achieving amazing transparency for water and glass. Oil and acrylic paintings can have that transparent—almost watercolor—look through the application of specific techniques and methods in conjunction with use of a paint medium. We will find our subjects in studio from photo references and still life. Spontaneity of method and color mixing for the subject will be achieved through class demonstrations, technique exercises, individual attention and critiques. (some experience in oils or acrylics)
SKILL LEVEL:
Students taking this course should have some experience using whatever medium they’re taking the class in (oil or acrylic).

Ticket purchases to Art League of Hilton Head events are final. Refunds will not be given for missed or classes/workshops.
If a class or workshop is canceled by Art League of Hilton Head a full refund will be given.
PLEASE BRING
PAINTS: 9 BASIC COLORS:
Zinc White (more transparent than titaniium)
Cadmium yellow (or other primary yellow)
Cadmium red Middle (or orange-leaning red)
Alizarin crimson (or violet-leaning red)
Ultramarine blue or Cobalt blue
Cerulean blue or Phthalo blue
Sap Green
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
SUGGESTED BRUSHES & PALETTE KNIFE:
Natural or synthetic bristle for oil/acrylic painting… bring what you have
1″ or 3/4″ flat or filbert
#8 pointed round – or size of your choice
trowel handle palette knife
NOTE: Please bring a palette – a board approx size 10″ x 12″ for laying out and mixing colors, (A white board, plate or foam core board covered with wax paper will work just fine.) Bring rags or paper towels for clean up, and a lidded jar to hold odorless mineral spirits (for oils) or water (for acrylics) for cleaning your brushes.
Medium you will need to obtain transparency:
Oil Students:Â bring Liquin medium by Winsor Newton used to increase transparency and speed drying.
Acrylic Students:Â bring Golden (brand) Gloss Medium, or Liquitex Gloss Medium for transparency.
SUPPORTS:
The following are appropriate supports for oils or acrylics: Canvas panels that come in a variety of sizes, stretched canvas, or masonite sanded and primed with gesso, heavy weight paper and mat or foam core board coated with a layer of gesso are also suitable for acrylics and oils.
