The theory of natural law believes that our civil laws should be based on morality, ethics, and what is inherently correct. This contrasts with “positive law” or “man-made law,” which is defined by statute and common law and may or may not reflect the natural law.
Natural law theory has long been the foundation of Western legal, political, and moral thought from ancient to modern times. It has been set as a standard that defines that which is legitimate and that which is unjust. This short course will examine the ways in which Natural Law has been framed, how it has evolved over the centuries, and responded to its critics; namely those who espouse Positive Law.
