Mike McDonell’s interest in films began in 1948 at the age of four. While sitting
between his mother and grandmother in a theatre in Long Beach, California, he first
heard the words, “Toot, toot, tootsie don’t cry,” and saw the darkened face and banjo
eyes of Eddie Cantor on the screen before him. The film was The Jazz Singer (1927),
the first “talkie” and the end of the silent era of film. He has been hooked ever since.
