Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of Mitchelville, the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States. This guided tour will take you through the historic grounds where freedom was first realized for enslaved Africans during the Civil War.

As you walk the park’s scenic trails, your guide will share compelling stories of resilience, ingenuity, and hope, providing a deeper understanding of Mitchelville’s significance in American history. Learn about the community’s establishment in 1862, its government, schools, and economy, as well as the legacy it left behind. You will visit key historical landmarks, experience interactive exhibits, and discover the vital role Mitchelville played in shaping Reconstruction and civil rights in the years to come. Ideal for history enthusiasts, families, and anyone eager to learn about this monumental chapter of African American heritage.

Group tours are welcome with a group of 10 or more on non-scheduled tour days. Please call the office to set group tours up (843 255 7301)
