Not only were its lands inhabited by Paleo-Indians nearly 10,000 years ago, but it was first noted in the log of a Spanish explorer in 1521 and has been an active participant in every major period of American history.
Enjoy a three-hour, expert guided tour to learn about Hilton Head’s uniqueness … from a pre-historic Native American structure known as a shell ring, to an early plantation which grew both indigo and the fabled sea island cotton, to the area of a Revolutionary War militia muster house and chapel that served as Hilton Head’s town center in the late 1700’s, to the location of the first fully-self-governed Freedmen’s town in the U.S., the birthplace of freedom for formerly enslaved African-Americans … all here on HHI!
Additionally, you will tour a Civil War fortification, witness to the nearly 35,000 troops who served on HHI during the years of the war, and we will visit the only location on the Island today that allows the experience of the landscape and nature of life on an Antebellum, sea island cotton plantation.
