Hilton Head Archaeology presents a study of mysterious coastal Ancient Indian Shell Rings

March 9 @ 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm

Free

Folks, don’t believe your browser. Ancient shell rings are not jewelry. Our speaker, Archaeologist Catherine Garcia of the SC Department of Natural Resources, conducted years of research at our coastal shell ring sites that are unique to the Southeast. Late Archaic period peoples accumulated huge amounts of seashells into enormous, circular structures known as shell rings. Hilton Head Island has two, carbon-dated at 4000+ years-old: the Sea Pines Shell Ring and the Fords Shell Ring. The exact purpose of these rings has been a subject of archaeological debate for decades. Do you have a theory? I do.
