Behind all great master artists, whose work stands the test of time, is a great draftsman. Rarely does the public get to see the early process that masters used to learn to draw accurately that are foundational to their later works of art. But it is this foundation that sets the master’s apart. There are drawing methods that have been passed down through the ages that can still be learned so that drawing becomes fearless second nature and underpins all compositions of your painting or drawing. Too difficult to learn? Not at all, in fact the methods offer a much more efficient and effective way to achieve life-like, 3-dimensional results that make seeing, drawing, and painting a much more enjoyable part of life as an artist. What could be better?

Students may use charcoal, soft pencil, or pastels for drawing but exclusively oil paint for learning the painting methods due to the more flexible and permanent nature of oil paint.  You may stay with drawing for as long as you like or begin oil painting when you feel confident that your drawing skills are solid. We’ll draw/paint from “nature” meaning what we see around us rather than from photos as much as possible

Instructor: Jana Stiles
Instructor Bio:

Drawing and painting have been comforting and solace to JANA STILES since childhood. The process nourishes her as nothing else does. Studying with various academic instructors and university professors Jana was left with a hunger for more serious art training and feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to study at the Atelier of Paul Ingbretson’s School of Painting and Drawing in Manchester, NH. Paul is one of the very few master teachers who carry on the lineage of the Boston School Painters. From Sargent to Tarbell, Wm Paxton, Frank Benson, the Hale’s, Gerome, Velasquez, and JL David the influence of combining the best techniques of color and immediacy of the Impressionists with the skill and accuracy in rendering from the Old Masters and Classical Representational Art is what these painters bring to an unparalleled level of contemporary fine art that will stand the test of time.In addition to the skills and practice of drawing and painting Jana has a fascination with the Creative Process itself, what influences seeing and translating visual impressions onto 2-dimensional surfaces, what internal barriers prevent progress, and how we as humans tend to talk to ourselves while being creative. With a background in Humanistic Psychology and decades of providing professional Health Coaching, she is skilled at helping people move past unhealthy patterns by supporting what is most natural and positive about their unique process. Jana enjoys setting a warm and supportive atmosphere when she facilitates any form of adult learning. It just works faster and better for everyone!
