What are Sankofa Nights?

The word Sankofa (pronounced SAHN-koh-fah) is a an African Proverb. Sankofa (SAHN-koh-fah) is an word in the Akan Twi and Fante languages of Ghana that means to “retrieve”. It literally breaks down into san – go back and get or to return; ko – to go; fa – to fetch, to seek and take. A Sankofa symbolizes the need to remember to be mindful of the past so that you can improve the future.

In African tradition, a Sankofa is represented as a bird looking backwards, reminding us to remember to be mindful of the past, so that we can improve the future.

Gullah culture is rooted in giving, sharing and kindness. What better way to learn about the traditions, foodways and language, than to come together at a Gullah table to experience an incredible Master Storyteller, the food, and language while helping preserve and protect the culture and its historic land?
