Visual art students at Hilton Head High School had an opportunity for a mural design experience in the classroom with acclaimed artist, Amiri Farris.
Alongside their teacher, artist Monique Dobbelaire, the students learned about mural arts, assisted in designing and painting a mural for their school inspired by the signature style of Mr. Farris, and develop their own design submissions for this mural arts community initiative.
The students were charged with designing something uniquely Hilton Head and we hope that this installation inspires both residents and visitors with themes connected to our local ecology and history.
About the artists who supported the students:
Monique Dobbelaere has been an arts educator for 21 years at HHIHS and the Memory Project Coordinator for Beaufort County Schools for 17. She teaches all levels of Painting, Drawing and IB Art and has published articles for SchoolArts Magazine in which student work is featured.
Amiri Geuka Farris is a contemporary, multidisciplinary artist who uses a wide range of work encompassing painting, drawing, video, performance, and installation. Farris received his MFA in Painting, with his BFA in Illustration and Graphic Design, from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
