Collage Dance Collective

Collage Dance Collective is one of the largest performing arts organizations in the South and one of the few professional ballet companies in the world with a roster of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) dancers.

In light of their work to dramatically change the landscape of dance in the American South, Collage was recently named a “Southern Cultural Treasure” by SouthArts and Ford Foundation.

Artistic Director Kevin Thomas and Executive Director Marcellus Harper founded Collage Dance Collective in 2006 in New York City to inspire the growth and diversity of ballet. In 2007, the company made its national debut at the Lyric Opera House in Kansas City and relocated to Memphis to take part in the city’s exciting artistic renaissance.

This year marks their fourteenth full-length season in Memphis as well as national and international tours presenting a diverse range of relevant classical and contemporary choreography from George Balanchine, Nacho Duato, Ulysses Dove, Joshua Manculich, Amy Hall Garner, Kevin Iega Jeff and more.

Collage opened its dance conservatory in 20009 to expand access to classical training to communities of color and prepare them for collegial and professional dance appointments. Area dancers can learn from the Collective’s talented artists in a 2-hour master dance class on February 29 at 5:30 pm.

A field trip performance for grades K-12 is also scheduled for 11 a.m. on Feb. 29.
