SUMMARY:Historic Holidays Author's Chat: Daughter of the Dawn
DESCRIPTION:Daughter of the Dawn – A Child of Hilton Head Island\, 1950-1956 \nAuthor: Avary Hack Doubleday \nWhat in the world were they thinking? Whatever it was\, Fred and Billie Hack’s decision to move their family to this South Carolina barrier island was the beginning of a unique childhood for Avary Hack Doubleday. She and her brothers grew up riding horses\, exploring pristine beaches\, paddling a bateau in a tidal creek behind their house\, and enjoying painted buntings in the backyard. They fell asleep at night to the haunting sound of buoys in the rivers and galloping horses ridden by on the road outside their bedroom window. Immerse yourself in Avary’s memories of another world in a time not so long ago. \nYou must register in order to receive the Zoom link to the Authors Chats! SUMMARY:Historic Holidays Author's Chat: Captain William Hilton & Founding of HHI
DESCRIPTION:Captain William Hilton and the Founding of Hilton Head Island\nAuthor: Dwayne Pickett\nBehind the pristine beaches and world renown of Hilton Head Island lies a history that dates back to the early exploration of the nation. In 1663\, William Hilton\, a mariner born in England\, was hired by a group in Barbados to find new lands for them to settle. Hilton led an exploration of the Port Royal Sound area\, where he named a high bluff of land Hiltons Head as a navigational marker for future sailors. The island began as a sparsely populated area on the fringe of English settlement in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries\, when it was called Trench’s Island on some maps. \nYou must register in order to receive the Zoom link to the Authors Chats! SUMMARY:Historic Holidays Author's Chat: Public Archaeology at Baynard-Zion
DESCRIPTION:Public Archaeology at Baynard-Zion: Bringing Life Back to an Antebellum Cemetery\nAuthor: Dr. Matthew C. Sanger\nHeritage tourism is a driving economic force in much of the coastal southeastern United States\, including on Hilton Head Island\, one of the most popular destinations for vacationers in the country. \nWorking with local community members in developing a diverse and multipronged public archaeology program\, we helped facilitate research and develop programming at the Baynard Mausoleum and Zion Chapel of Ease Cemetery. \nUsing a constellation of techniques\, including geophysical surveys\, genetic testing of human remains\, and limited excavations\, research conducted at Baynard-Zion provides an opportunity to enhance public perception and understanding of pivotal historic events and people on the island while also assisting in development plans that promote heritage tourism. Dr. Sanger’s article was published in Southeastern Archaeology Conference 2020. \nYou must register in order to receive the Zoom link to the Authors Chats!
