As part of Ranky Tanky\, she has helped bring the rich cultural and musical traditions of the Gullah Geechee people to prestigious stages across the U.S. and Europe\, including Lincoln Center and Norway’s Molde Jazz Festival. The group’s work is featured in the Library of Congress and the International African American Museum. In 2022\, Quiana was selected as one of just 24 artists worldwide to develop and teach curriculum for Carnegie Hall’s Musical Explorers program and currently serves on its advisory board. \nA Charleston\, South Carolina native\, Quiana began her professional career with Calvin Gilmore’s Carolina Opry and gained national recognition as a Top 48 finalist on Season 2 of American Idol. She has since toured and performed with artists including Kelly Clarkson\, Maroon 5\, Keith Sweat\, Clay Aiken\, and Miranda Lambert. Quiana has appeared on major national television programs\, including Saturday Night Live\, The View\, Today\, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno\, Tyra\, and Good Morning America\, establishing herself as one of the Lowcountry’s most celebrated vocalists. \nLavon Stevens has traveled and performed all over the country including Aspen\, Colorado\, Atlanta\, Georgia and Orlando\, Florida. DESCRIPTION: The photography exhibition A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald\, Booker T. Washington\, and the 4\,978 Schools that Changed America  opens on August 1 and will be on view through November 1\, 2026.\n\nThe public is invited to a talk and reception with photographer and author Andrew Feiler on September 17. The talk begins at 5 pm\, followed by a reception. The event ends at 7:30 pm. Admission to the museum is free.\n\nA remarkable collaboration\nThe Rosenwald Schools program was a partnership between Jewish philanthropist Julius Rosenwald\, president of Sears\, Roebuck and Company\, and Booker T. Washington\, prominent African American educator\, leader\, and founder of the Tuskegee Institute. Between 1912 and 1937\, this historic partnership helped fund the construction of nearly 5\,000 schools for Black children in the segregated South and border states.\nA Better Life for Their Children features photographs and narratives by Feiler\, whose work documents surviving Rosenwald school buildings and tells the stories of people connected to them.\n\n“This is an opportunity for visitors to learn about a significant but largely unknown chapter that connects American\, Black\, and Jewish history\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions at the Coastal Discovery Museum. “A Better Life for Their Children reflects our mission to inspire people to have a deeper understanding of our region’s history and culture.” \nOf the original 4\,978 schools\, only about 500 survive. To tell this story visually\, Feiler drove more than 25\,000 miles\, photographed 105 schools\, and interviewed dozens of former students\, teachers\, preservationists\, and community leaders. Among the alumni of Rosenwald Schools are author Maya Angelou\, civil rights activist Medgar Evers\, and Congressman John Lewis\, whose portrait is included in the exhibit. \n\n “With a shared passion for education and social action\, Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald reached across divides of race\, religion\, and region to make America a better place for all\,” said Feiler. “Their remarkable accomplishments speak to us today. Individual actions matter.”\nNearly 500 Rosenwald Schools in SC\nSouth Carolina had 481 Rosenwald schools\, more than any other state except North Carolina and Mississippi. Her joyful energy has captivated audiences around the world and her passion for music is infectious. She has absorbed the influences of the jazz guitar greats and has woven them into an exciting personal sound. Her unique ability to connect with audiences always leaves them wanting more. \nJocelyn Gould has performed internationally in the groups of Grammy nominated vocalist Freddy Cole\, Trumpeter Etienne Charles and DownBeat Rising Star trombonist Michael Dease. She can be heard on albums lead by Michael Dease\, Jon Gordon\, Diego Rivera\, Randy Napoleon and Will Bonness. She is the 1st place winner of the 2018 Wilson Centre International Jazz Guitar competition. \nJocelyn’s debut release as a leader\, ‘Elegant Traveler’\, was nominated for “Jazz Album of the Year” in the 2021 JUNO awards. Elegant Traveler showcases Jocelyn’s warm and inviting sound and melodic compositions with an all star band. \nJocelyn is a professor and Head of Guitar Department at Humber College in Toronto. \nGuitarist Jackson Evans is a staple of the Low Country jazz community. He is known for his partnership with bassist and singer Maggie Evans and leading his own trio\, but can also be heard with the Jody Espina Trio\, the Martin Lesch band\, and occasionally as a guest with the gypsy-honkytonk outfit\, Velvet Caravan. His style is energetic\, rhythmic\, and draws deeply from the jazz tradition while maintaining a quirky individualism culled from the influence of other music. \nJackson holds a Bachelor of Music from Utah State University in his hometown\, Logan\, Utah. After graduating in 2004\, he and Maggie relocated to Savannah\, Georgia and began to establish themselves as performers. In 2013\, the couple were invited to perform a six month residency at the prestigious JZ Club in Hangzhou\, China as co-leaders of a quartet (a follow-up to the previous year in residence at another club in Hangzhou). \nAs an ardent supporter of music education\, Jackson has maintained a private studio\, taught in community settings\, and mentored young musicians. He is an active member of the Jazz Education Network and was selected to present at their 2018 conference in New Orleans. \nOutside of his performance schedule\, Jackson is a faculty member at the Hilton Head Jazz Camp\, serves on the board of directors for The Junior Jazz Foundation\, and works for Benedetto Guitars as Customer Relations Manager\, Sales Manager\, and Marketing Director.

DESCRIPTION:Community leaders\, elected officials\, military veterans\, clergy\, family\, friends\, and classmates will gather on Saturday\, October 10\, to honor one of the South Carolina Lowcountry’s most distinguished sons\, Chaplain\n(Major General) William “Bill” Green\, Jr.\, United States Army.  The public recognition ceremony\, designated as Chaplain (Major General) William “Bill” Green\, Jr. Day\, begins at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church\, 540 William Hilton Parkway\,\nHilton Head Island\, and will celebrate Green’s extraordinary life of faith\, military service\, and leadership.  A son of Hilton Head Island\, General Green was born in Savannah\, Georgia\, but was reared on Hilton Head Island\, deeply rooted in his Gullah Geechee family heritage. A graduate of the former H.E. McCracken High School in Bluffton\, General Green retired on August 1\, 2026\, after serving as the 26th Chief of Chaplains of the U.S. Army. Over more than three decades\, he offered spiritual leadership and guidance to soldiers\, families\, and Army civilians worldwide\, steadfastly supporting religious freedom throughout the Army. The celebration’s theme\, “From General Mitchel to General Green\,” traces a remarkable\njourney spanning more than 160 years of American history. The story begins with General Ormsby M. Mitchel\, whose leadership in the Civil War led to the founding of the Town of Mitchelville on Hilton Head Island in 1862 — the nation’s first self-governed community of formerly enslaved people. Established on principles of freedom\, education\, self determination\, faith\, and community\, Mitchelville became a beacon of hope and opportunity for generations.\nThat legacy comes full circle in General Green\, a descendant of Mitchelville whose family roots are deeply connected to Historic Mitchelville. From those roots\, he rose to become a national military leader whose life and career have been defined by faith\, service\, leadership\, and humility. \nAs the Chief of Chaplains\, General Green reached one of the highest levels of leadership in the U.S. Army and stands among the most distinguished military leaders to emerge from the Gullah Geechee community. Washington\, prominent African American educator\, leader\, and founder of the Tuskegee Institute.
