SUMMARY:Daniel Runde-The American Imperative: Reclaiming Global Leadership
DESCRIPTION:What should our global strategy look like in an age of renewed great power competition? And what must America offer to a newly empowered developing world when we’re no longer the only major player? \nIn The American Imperative\, Washington insider Daniel Runde makes the case for building a new global consensus through vigorous internationalism and the judicious use of soft power. Runde maps out many of the steps that we need to take –– primarily in the non-military sphere –– to ensure an alliance of stable and secure\, like-minded\, self-reliant partner nations in order to prevent rising authoritarian powers such as China from running the world.

SUMMARY:Rachael Thompson- The Correspondence of George C. Marshall and Winston S. Churchill
DESCRIPTION:With Admiration and Respect: The Correspondence of George C. Marshall and Winston S. Churchill\nDuring World War II\, Prime Minister Churchill and U.S. Army Chief of Staff Marshall were engaged as key players in a dozen wartime conferences that built the Anglo-American alliance and shaped the strategies that led to victory. This presentation\, which focuses on a series of letters exchanged between the two leaders beginning early in the war\, and continuing through Marshall’s death in 1959\, reveals a lasting relationship of deep mutual respect. The fascinating letters run the gamut from details of the invasion of Normandy to congratulatory messages for honors won. Remarkable archival photographs are included in this presentation.

SUMMARY:Lucy Kurtzer-Ellenbogen- Israel\, Post Netanyahu
DESCRIPTION:Love him\, hate him\, but you cannot dismiss him. Netanyahu shaped the political and social panorama of Israel forever. A strong unapologetic man of many dimensions that sought world recognition for Israel and often limelight for himself. Twelve years of Netanyahu have come abruptly to an end. Bittersweet for his staunch supporters\, and “about time” for his enemies. He took on Israel’s foes and critics vigorously and deflated accusations like a smooth Teflon pan. But through it all\, he did it his way. \nSo\, what’s in store for Israel post-Netanyahu? It will not be a cakewalk. The problems that plagued the country during Netanyahu’s term are not disappearing overnight. The new government is like a thin sheet of ice\, it will only take a small crack to break. How is Bennet going to move forward? \n

SUMMARY:MICHAEL WOLDEMARIAM: THE RED SEA CORRIDOR IN AN ERA OF GLOBAL CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:The Red Sea region is among the world’s most strategic maritime corridors\, vital to global trade and naval access to the Western Indian Ocean and broader Indo-Pacific. It’s also an increasingly volatile geographic zone\, beset by an array of challenges that threaten the security and prosperity of littoral countries and much of the international community. These include Great and Middle power competition; economic and demographic pressures; rapid ecological change; and weakening states and the proliferation of violent non-state actors.

SUMMARY:Chris Preble- The Current State of US Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:Has the United States been a force for liberty around the world? Should it be? And if so\, how? To answer these questions\, Christopher A. Preble traces the history of U.S. foreign policy from the American Founding to the present\, examining the ideas that have animated it\, asking whether America’s policy choices have made the world safer and freer\, and considering the impact of those choices on freedom at home. \nPreble will explain the need to question the assumptions that drive American foreign policy in the modern era―especially the assumption that American politicians can and should forcibly remake the international order to suit their desires. He asks readers to consider whether America and the world would be safer and freer if U.S. foreign policy incorporated libertarian insights about the limitations of government power.

SUMMARY:Kevin Cassidy: Global Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:The Global Supply Chain is too complex\, interconnected\, and fragile to be made completely immune to shocks\, especially ones such as seismic as a global pandemic\, or a major war. Major ports the world over\, which used to operate like clockwork\, are now beset by delays\, with container ships queuing for days in some of the worst congestion ever recorded. A backlog of orders and a shortage of drivers have caused trucking costs to triple. More than a million containers due to travel to Europe from China by train — on a route that goes through Russia — must now make their journey by sea as sanctions bite. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also severed key supply lines for nickel\, aluminum\, wheat\, and sunflower oil\, causing commodity prices to skyrocket. \nDespite the difficulties of today’s supply crisis\, Kevin Cassidy is optimistic about the opportunities being created.  He believes it is an exciting time for businesses and labor to rethink supply chains and make them stronger for companies\, workers and people around the world.

SUMMARY:Sergie Medvedev: The Return of the Russian Leviathan
DESCRIPTION:Global Speakers Program \nRussia’s relationship with its neighbors and with the West has worsened dramatically in recent years. Under Putin’s leadership\, the country has annexed Crimea\, begun a war in Eastern Ukraine\, used chemical weapons on the streets of the UK\, and created an army of Internet trolls to meddle in the US presidential elections. How should we understand this apparent relapse into aggressive imperialism and militarism? \nSergei Medvedev will discuss this new wave of Russian nationalism which he feels is the result of mentalities that have long been embedded within the Russian psyche. Whereas in the West\, the turbulent social changes of the 1960s and raising awareness of the legacy of colonialism have modernized attitudes\, Russia has been stymied by an enduring sense of superiority over its neighbors alongside a painful nostalgia for empire. It is this irrational worldview that Putin and others have exploited\, as seen most clearly in Russia’s recent foreign policy decisions\, including the annexation of Crimea.

SUMMARY:Kent Harrington: Living with Kim Chong and North Korea’s Nuclear Threat
DESCRIPTION: Living with Kim Chong and North Korea’s Nuclear Threat\nDespite seven decades of American military and political engagement on the Korean peninsula\, Pyongyang’s dynastic communist regime continues to challenge US policymakers as well as stability in East Asia.  Like its predecessors\, the Biden administration has sought to mix diplomacy and deterrence\, while cooperating with its allies in Seoul\, Tokyo\, and elsewhere to constrain North Korea’s nuclear threat.  The results: like his father and grandfather\, Kim Chong Un has continued to build his nuclear arsenal despite the costs to Pyongyang and the North Korean people.  70 years after the end of the Korean war\, the question is obvious.  Is the past prologue?  Is Kim’s arsenal simply a fact we must live with\, and if it is\, what are the risks?

SUMMARY:Marie Yovanovitch- Ukraine: Can Democracy Survive?
DESCRIPTION:Marie Yovanovitch was at the height of her diplomatic career when it all came crashing down. In the middle of her third ambassadorship—a rarity in the world of diplomacy—she was targeted by a smear campaign and abruptly recalled from her post in Kyiv\, Ukraine. In the months that followed\, she endured personal tragedy while simultaneously being pulled into the blinding lights of the first impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump. It was a time of chaos and pain\, for her and for the nation. \nYet Yovanovitch was no stranger to instability and injustice. Born into a family that had survived Soviet and Nazi terror\, she first saw the corrosive effect of corruption in Somalia while cutting her teeth as a diplomat in the male-dominated world of the 1980s State Department. She was an eyewitness to the 1993 constitutional crisis in Russia and the street fighting in Moscow. And she rose to the top of her profession in the crucible of the former USSR\, where she saw how President Vladimir Putin adeptly exploited corrupt leaders in neighboring countries and undermined their developing democracies. \nNowhere was Putin’s aggression clearer than in Ukraine\, where Russia meddled in elections\, launched cyberattacks\, peddled misinformation\, illegally annexed Crimea\, invaded the Donbas\, and attacked Ukrainian ships in the Black Sea. But when Yovanovitch was abruptly recalled from her post and Ukraine’s democratically elected president\, Volodymyr Zelenskyy\, found himself set upon by Trump\, it became clear just how dangerously close to the edge America itself had strayed. \nThrough it all\, Yovanovitch tirelessly advocated for the Ukrainian people\, while advancing U.S. interests and staying true to herself. She will discuss Ukraine’s prospects going forward and discuss whether the Ukrainian democracy can survive.

SUMMARY:The Petroleum Industry
DESCRIPTION:The global petroleum industry is central to so many facets of life and essential to the global economy\, yet it is also a strategic necessity. Crude and its many refinements are also part of a geopolitical contest\, the lifeblood of military campaigns\, and an elevator to rising GDP. And yet how long can it last\, is there a “crude curse”\, how does the global supply chain work\, what impact on the environment\, and do current events have on the security of our national supply and the world? \nCarlton Dallas\, a petroleum industry insider\, will review the impact of taxes\, price comparisons with other countries\, the history of discovery\, relay how crude is tethered to politics\, and how four developments have improved US energy independence.

SUMMARY:The U.S. Mexican Relationship- It's Complicated- Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne
DESCRIPTION:What is the best approach to the Mexican migration problem?\nIs the weakening of Mexican Democracy a threat to the U.S.?\nWhat economic tools can Biden employ to help influence Mexico to improve its relations with the U.S.?\n\nEarl Anthony Wayne will discuss the important and complicated relationship between Mexico and the United States.  No country relationship touches the daily lives of more Americans than the relationship with our southern neighbor.  Mexico is a vital economic partner as America’s second-largest trading partner and the largest buyer of U.S. exports.  Yet\, Mexico and the U.S. also need to manage incredibly challenging problems surrounding migration and cross-border crime\, for example.  Getting cooperation right between the two neighbors is a particularly tricky task\, but there are no ways around working to make it better — neither of us can move away! \nAmbassador Earl Anthony Wayne is a Distinguished Diplomat in Residence teaching at American University’s School of International Service.  He is also a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and Co-Chair of its Mexico Institute Advisory Board. In addition\, he is a Senior Non-Resident Advisor at the Atlantic Council and the Center for Security and International Studies. He serves on the Board of the American Academy of Diplomacy.  Wayne writes\, speaks\, and consults on a wide range of topics.

SUMMARY:Ambassador Douglas Silliman- The Changing Landscape of the Middle EAst
DESCRIPTION:Can the Middle East move away from its oil-centric economic base?\nHow can countries work to soothe ethnic and religious differences?\nHow are the leaders preparing the next generation of young people for the job market?\n\n Fundamental forces are in the process of changing the societal and economic landscape of the Middle East. Region-specific conditions combine with more universal factors—the sweeping tide of globalization\, technical progress\, and the introduction of more powerful communication tools. \n Meanwhile\, the Middle East is marked by its historical legacy of powerful ancient civilization followed by centuries of relative stagnation. More recently\, rapid economic growth and social change have been seen in parts of the region\, including GCC countries. However\, much of the progress achieved thus far \nremains dependent on a narrow economic base\, notably the riches emanating from abundant oil and gas extraction. Other countries across the Middle East remain plagued by underdevelopment. \nAmb. Silliman will discuss the challenges and opportunities of the Biden administration\, considering the changing landscape of the Middle East.   Such changes include the Gulf states as regional players\, JCPOA and Iran\, human rights reform in Saudi Arabia\, and other regional power alliances.  Moreover\, these changes will occur within the context of a post-Covid pandemic economic recovery and climate change.
