SUMMARY:Open Drawing & Painting Workshop with Jana Stiles
DESCRIPTION:Bring in those drawings or paintings that you would like help with or bring some ideas of a work you’d like to start. Each piece will be explored with individualized assistance and inspiration. Working alongside students\, Jana demonstrates possibilities to practice and incorporate into your art. Other demonstrations will be offered throughout the day for inspiration and help in learning new skills. This is a workshop to challenge yourself to try something you have always wanted to learn but not sure where to start. Breaking down seemingly complex problems into simple steps can help you see your work in a whole new way. You may work from your own photos or from creative still-life projects that will be set up in our workspace. We may even pair up and sketch each other for fun!  Join us for a day of exploration in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere for learning. \n\n\n\n\nSKILL LEVEL:\nThis class is designed for intermediate and advanced level students. \nREFUND POLICY:\nTicket purchases to Art League of Hilton Head events are final. Credits or Refunds will not be given for missed or classes/workshops. \nIf a class or workshop is canceled by Art League of Hilton Head a full refund will be given. \n\n\n\nMaterials Included:\nNo materials are included in this class. A list of materials you should bring with you will be provided upon registration.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLEASE BRING:\n\nBring drawings or paintings in progress\, or plan to start something new \nIf you are working from photos\, enlarge to appropriate size and mount on cardboard or surface that will sit properly on an easel (easels are provided by the Academy) \nWhatever medium you are working with (soft or vine charcoal\, charcoal or soft pencils\, color pencils\, pastel pencils\, soft pastels\, oil pastels\, oils or acrylic\, watercolor etc) \nCanvases\, panels or papers appropriate for the medium you are working with \nYour brushes\, portable palette\, paper towels\, apron\, latex gloves/mask (especially if working in pastel) \nODORLESS\, NON-TOXIC MEDIUMS AND BRUSH CLEANERS. This is required for everyone’s health. Best medium for oils is Artists Walnut Oil (NOT food walnut oil). Turpenoid Natural is the best for cleaning brushes but should not be used as a medium. Bring a plastic bag or container to take your brushes home and clean them there if you are using any other type of cleaner. \nPLUMB LINE\nmade from a string with a weighted bobber or old set of keys on the end. SUMMARY:Start to Finish: Beginner Pine Needle Basket Making
DESCRIPTION:2-WEEKS\nThursdays (12:30 to 3:30pm)\nJanuary 16\, 23\, 2025 \nJoin local pine needle basket maker Karen McCarthy for this exciting new two-part workshop designed to allow plenty of time to complete a small pine needle basket of your own! \nDuring Session I students will learn the basics of coiling a pine needle basket\, including how to start a basket around a cabochon center\, how to weave so your stitches line up on both sides of the basket\, and how to change thread. Students will have the opportunity to take their beginning basket home and continue working on it to make a larger basket or just return with the started basket the following week to finish it. \nDuring Session II students will continue the basket started in Part I and learn how to shape the sides of the basket\, how to do a wrap stitch\, and how to finish the basket. \n\nSKILL:\nThis workshop is appropriate for all levels. Beginners will find the workshop very helpful. \nNOTE:\nIn addition to the registration cost\, students should bring $30 cash to pay the instructor for materials\, consisting of 2oz of longleaf pine needles prepared in glycerin\, a cabochon center\, waxed polyester cord\, 2 sewing needles\, a small piece of beeswax\, and written instructions.
