SUMMARY:Start to Finish: Beginner Pine Needle Basket Making
DESCRIPTION:2-WEEKS\nThursdays (12:30 to 3:30pm)\nJanuary 16\, 23\, 2025 \nJoin local pine needle basket maker Karen McCarthy for this exciting new two-part workshop designed to allow plenty of time to complete a small pine needle basket of your own! \nDuring Session I students will learn the basics of coiling a pine needle basket\, including how to start a basket around a cabochon center\, how to weave so your stitches line up on both sides of the basket\, and how to change thread. Students will have the opportunity to take their beginning basket home and continue working on it to make a larger basket or just return with the started basket the following week to finish it. \nDuring Session II students will continue the basket started in Part I and learn how to shape the sides of the basket\, how to do a wrap stitch\, and how to finish the basket. \n\nSKILL:\nThis workshop is appropriate for all levels. Beginners will find the workshop very helpful. \nNOTE:\nIn addition to the registration cost\, students should bring $30 cash to pay the instructor for materials\, consisting of 2oz of longleaf pine needles prepared in glycerin\, a cabochon center\, waxed polyester cord\, 2 sewing needles\, a small piece of beeswax\, and written instructions. The class will start with a full painting demonstration. Carol will share her process for blocking in large simple shapes before layering colors. Learn how to capture beautiful color in your clouds\, focus on a strong composition\, define values\, establish a point of focus\, and how to see and use color effectively in your paintings. You will also learn how to interpret your reference photographs and understand the relationships between value\, color temperature and color intensity. There will be personalized teaching and individualized feedback throughout the day.SKILL LEVEL:\nThis class is designed for beginner students\, intermediate students and advanced students. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest and currently lives on Hilton Head Island\, SC. She is an award-winning artist\, instructor\, and juror who has exhibited her paintings extensively at galleries\, museums\, and shows. \nShe works with oils and the brilliant color and texture of soft pastels. Her background in traveling has a strong influence on her subject matter. Carol employs a contemporary impressionistic style and has painted plein air for more than 20 years. \nIn 2012\, she was awarded a prestigious Artist Residency for one month at “Les Amis de la Grande Vigne” in Dinan\, France\, the former home and studio of the famous French artist Yvonne Jean-Haffen. One of Carol’s paintings was selected for the Museum’s permanent collection and was on exhibition in France during 2013 and again in 2019. \nShe is an award winning signature member of The Maryland Pastel Society\, as well as current member of The American Impressionist Society\, Oil Painters of America\, The Pastel Society of America\, and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. Perfect for date-night\, or girls-night-out\, Kristen will lead attendees in completing their very own Sea Turtle painting in acrylic paint on a standard size canvas panel that can easily and inexpensively be framed to enjoy for years to come! \n\n\n\n\nNOTE:\nAll supplies are included in the cost of this workshop.
