He earned his BFA from Wayne State University and started working as an art director for a decorating firm. However\, the Viet Nam War interrupted\, and for the next twenty years he flew as a pilot for the USAF. His world-wide travels enriched his love of Fine Art\, and when he retired in Tennessee\, he returned to school for his Masters in Art Education. \nWhile teaching visual arts in high school and college\, he began painting and exhibiting in the Middle Tennessee region. President of the Mid-Cumberland Art League\, numerous awards in juried shows\, commissions for murals and portraits\, selected as a gilder for Nashville’s Athena project are but a few of his accomplishments. After moving to the Low Country\, he began teaching at the Hilton Head Art League Academy and the Society of Bluffton Artists in 2009. \nDennis is currently an exhibiting artist at Art League of Hilton Head and the Society of Bluffton Artists where he has been a featured artist. \nHe takes great delight in observing and interpreting the world we live in\, often with an eye for intricate detail and subtle colors. Many of his landscape paintings are easily identifiable as area locations. In addition\, still life\, portraiture\, animal life are frequent subject matter and are presented in his unique but traditionally realistic style as well as showing his versatility in paint mediums.

SUMMARY:"Paint Fast IN Oils or Acrylics" with Nancy Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Thursday & Friday (10am to 1pm)\nJune 5\, 6\, 2025 \nDuring this class\, we will focus on how to create full spectrum compositions. We will use detail to create interest in the foreground and atmospheric perspective to create distance in the background. The object of this course is to learn to paint large enough to allow yourself to loosen up and enjoy the process. \nIt is important to bring a large canvas\, nothing smaller than a 24″ x 30″\, however\, bring one as large as you are comfortable with if you want to bring bigger! You’ll also bring a few photographs you are excited about and would enjoy painting. The object of this class is to paint large to enable yourself to loosen up and not be so fussy over details. We will use under-painting to speed up the process and overcome the intimidation factor of that big white canvas. \nPlease visit my website to view my work and feel free to call or email prior to or after the class with any questions. \nI am looking forward to painting with you! \nSKILL LEVEL:\nThis class was designed for oil and acrylic painters of all levels. \nREFUND POLICY:\nClass fees to Art League of Hilton Head events are final. SUMMARY:"Greens\, Glorious Greens" an online step-by-step demonstration with Alex Sharma
DESCRIPTION:90-MINUTES\nFriday\, June 6\, 2025\n(10am to 11:30am EST)\nYour ticket includes access to the LIVE demo via ZOOM plus a copy of the recording\, good to re-watch as many times as you’d like for 30 days!\n\nGetting the right green for your subject can often be a big challenge.  This paint along demo will give you all the information and methods you will need to portray greens in sunlight\, low light\, shadow\, and distance.  The following specific greens will widen your color palette and create new exciting greens: sap\, phthalo/viridian\, hookers\, and olive.  Alex will paint in watercolor\, but the color mixings are applicable to all paint media. \nAlex will use the following green colors separately and will demonstrate how to alter them for the effect you are seeking.   The additional colors will be used to change the greens in different ways to get them to advance into the light or retreat into shadow or distance. \n*Note: you do not need all these greens—and you may have others.  If you are painting along with Alex\, use the green(s) that you have. Much of the mixing is the same. \nVariety of greens along with other colors to change the greens to create the illusion of depth\, atmospheric distance\, light and shadow: \nSap Green\nPhthalo Green or Viridian\nOlive Green\nHookers Green\nUltramarine Blue\nPhthalo Blue\nCadmium Red Light\nBurnt Sienna\nBurnt Umber\nAlizarin Crimson\nCadmium Yellow \nNOTE:\nPlease be sure to Download & Sign-Up for Zoom ahead of time\, it’s free! We will send you the Link to the session the day before the session. Late registrations will receive the link the morning of the session. You will be able to join the waiting room at 9:30am to ensure you are set up and ready to go. Attendees will receive a copy of the video on Monday afternoon following the demonstration\, which will be good to re-watch as many times as you want for up to 30 days. \nWhile this is a demonstration\, and not a class\, we do encourage you to ask questions throughout the demonstration because odds are if you’re thinking it\, someone else is too. We ask all participants to stay muted unless asking a question so that we don’t pick up any background noise and ensure participants can hear and that our recording is clear as well. \n\n\n\nSKILL LEVEL: \nThis class is perfect for students of any level. \nREFUND POLICY:\nTicket purchases to Art League of Hilton Head events are final. Credits or Refunds will not be given for missed or classes/workshops. \nIf a class or workshop is canceled by Art League of Hilton Head a full refund will be given. \n\n  \n\n\n\nMaterials Included:\nNo materials are provided by Art League of Hilton Head for this demonstration.\n\n\nRequirements:\nSUPPLY LIST:\nAlex will be using the above colors in watercolor for this demo. She recommends you use similar colors in the medium of your choice. Also if you plan on painting along\, be sure to have the surface medium of your choice\, and whatever other basic tools/supplies you need to use your medium. \nQUESTIONS?\nPlease Email:Academy@ArtLeagueHHI.org
