Admission to the museum is free. \nConceptual Threads features 60+ works by the cooperative’s four members — Ron Hodge\, Roberta (Ro) Morrissey\, Peg Weschke\, and Jody Wigton— plus four guest quilters selected by the group.  Guest quilters are Chris Lanigan\, Deborah Legiadre\, Marty Kotter\, and Candace Hackett Shively. \n“We are delighted to once again showcase these award-winning fiber artists who explore both abstract themes and personal stories through this unique art form\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions\, at the Coastal Discovery Museum. \nConceptual Threads celebrates how the artists use fabric and thread to share ideas\, emotions\, and connections that go beyond what is seen on the surface\, said Morrissey\, known for her painterly approach. “Each quilt is an invitation to experience quilts not only as works of art\, but also as conversations—between tradition and innovation\, artist and viewer\, and the threads that tie us all together.” \n

SUMMARY:Gullah Virtual Library at Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Discovering the Gullah Culture\nThe Gullah people of the Lowcountry are descendants of the enslaved Africans from West and Central Africa\, and their rich cultural legacy endures. The Gullah (sometimes called Geechee) corridor extends from North Carolina to northern Florida including both the mainland and sea islands. \nAccording to Gullah expert Dr. Emory Campbell\,* the Gullah have preserved much of their African language and cultural heritage in part due to isolated living conditions. Gullah artistic traditions such as music\, storytelling\, folktales\, crafts\, basket making or “sewing” and rice-based foods encompass strong influences from West African Cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGullah Traditions Endure\nGullah artists such as basketweavers\, dancers\, storytellers\, and singers carry on traditions brought to the Lowcountry. For example\, coiled sea grass basketry has survived in America for 300 years\, and these baskets are now recognized as an art form. Gullah spoken language\, folktales and stories as well as spirituals and gospels are passed down from generation to generation. \n\n\nThe Gullah Virtual Library\nThis Virtual Library was designed to provide educators with resources such as videos\, lessons plans\, handouts\, and digital content. SUMMARY:Poetry Trail of Hilton Head Island
DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT\, YOU ASK?\nWell\, first\, it’s all about the poets. Did you know Hilton Head Island is packed with poets? Award-winning\, multi-published\, open mic slamming’ all-around jamming’ actual poets? Come on in! Meet us! We’ve got a trail of reading just for you. If you are here\, you have found at least one such poet. What location number was it? Where did you find it? Because whoever you found\, there are 23 more across the island! Some of the featured poets are:\nElizabeth Robin\nMiho Kinnas\nPhil Lindsey\nBarry Dickson\nLola Campbell\nSofia Segura\nBill Borg\nBill Newby\nDenise Spencer\nLuAnn Winkle\nKyle Zubatsky \nSecond\, it’s all about cool ways to see our island! The idea came about as a marriage of technology\, creative writing\, public art\, and arts-minded businesses. It’s a new way to see Hilton Head Island: through the eyes of the poets who live in the area. Confused\, wondering What is it? as you stare at the huge sculpture Carocol in Shelter Cove Park? Scan the trail sign and Elizabeth Abrams gives you one interpretation with “O’Keefe’s Woody Orchid.” It’s the kind of collaboration that makes the arts an experience.\nThird\, it’s all about collaboration! The project is a partnership between the Town of Hilton Head Island’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Island Writers’ Network. Restaurants and art shops and theaters and historic spots are involved\, and the poems just add to their stories. Here are some of our poetry hosts:\nArts Center of Coastal Carolina\nGullah Museum\nHHI Sculpture Installations\nHHSO Soundwaves\nPicture This Gallery\nRedfish\nRollers\nTio’s\n\nAnd finally\, it’s all about keeping it fresh. Every season of the year\, the poems at most stops will be switched out for others. As we said\, we’re packed with poets\, so we’ll swap out poems regularly so that you can meet all of them. Plus\, that reading trail will keep changing\, so you can visit again and again and it will always feel new.\nHow does it work? Along the trail are easy-to-find\, numbered signs containing two QR codes. One takes you to a poem written by a poet living in the area\, plus bonus information about that poet. The other takes you to the trail’s Facebook page\, where you can find the entire route. There\, you can plan a full tour\, or comment on the poem\, the art\, or the business you visited along the way. Scanning the sign allows the Office of Cultural Affairs to track traffic\, key data that helps direct new projects in our arts community.

SUMMARY:Harbour Town Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Spirit of Beginning \nThe Harbour Town Lighthouse has stood for more than 50 years as a beacon and a symbol of the creative spirit of Charles Fraser. The Sea Pines founder and visionary is laid to rest under the Liberty Oak facing the Lighthouse he built as a welcome to all who come to visit or stay a lifetime. It has become a part of the story people take home with them\, an essential symbol of the dreams that have come true here. No matter how often you come to Hilton Head Island\, the Harbour Town Lighthouse is a must-do experience. \nA visit to Hilton Head Island without a visit to the Harbour Town Lighthouse has been described as\, “like going to Paris and not seeing the Eifel Tower. It’s not just a landmark – although it is all of that – the Lighthouse is the single strongest symbol of Hilton Head Island. It is the image that says it all. Everyone from visitors to publishers to movie-makers pictures the Lighthouse\, when Hilton Head Island is the topic. There are a host of good reasons for that. \nHow the Story is Told \nThe Lighthouse has been so effective at telling the story of Hilton Head Island\, that it was designated an Official Coast Guard Museum. The Coast Guard display features a 1:5 scale model of the “Eagle\,” the historic 295-foot cutter that serves as a seagoing classroom for Coast Guard cadets. The ship’s original plans were used in the construction of the 16-foot\, hand-built model\, a truly amazing work of art. \nViewing the Paradise Beyond \nThe Lighthouse Museum features a Daufuskie Island display consisting of artifacts and a taste of the curious\, mystical story of Daufuskie. From the pottery of prehistoric civilizations to the refined\, sea island sensibility of Haig Point. From Native Americans through Spanish explorers through the tenacious families who stayed on through thick and thin to enjoy the beauty of life on this “paradise beyond\,” the Daufuskie Island display in the Lighthouse is a trip worth taking. \nFrom pre-history and native peoples to the life and times at Sea Pines over the years\, a visit through the lighthouse has become a fascinating climb through the history of Hilton Head Island. There’s something fun to learn on every landing. And there is a state-of-the-art webcam on the top so you can call your friends and family wherever they are\, have them link up to the Lighthouse web site to see you in action on the observation deck.

SUMMARY:Grammy-Nominated\, World-Renowned Guitarist Dan Wilson's Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Show Ticket $25 \nDinner is required with all reservations. \n*6:30 PM SHOW – DINNER RESERVATIONS FROM 5:15 PM \n*9:00 PM SHOW – DINNER RESERVATIONS FROM 8:00 PM \nDan Wilson – Guitar \nGlenn Zaleski – Piano \nBrandon Rose – Bass \nDavid Throckmorton – Drums \n“Dan Wilson is the man with the magic touch. Highly endorsed by none other than Pat Metheny\, Wilson’s reputation as a first-rate jazz guitarist has permeated the walls of the elite in the upper echelon of jazz guitar. This Grammy-nominated artist has already cemented his place as a world-class player\, and his recent exploits show that he has no plans of slowing down.” – Jazz Guitar Today \nTraces of Wilson’s major guitar influences – including Wes Montgomery\, Charlie Christian\, Joe Pass\, and George Benson to name a few – can be discerned through his playing\, but his musical identity has been shaped by everything from gospel and blues to traditional jazz\, hip-hop and horn players like Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson. \nAfter graduating from Hiram College\, Wilson made his recording debut with pianist Joe McBride and performed to worldwide acclaim with Joey DeFrancesco and Christian McBride’s Tip City\, eventually recording his debut as a leader To Whom It May Concern. Wilson has had the honor of sharing the stage with jazz greats including Eric Marienthal\, Russell Malone\, Les McCann\, René Marie\, Jeff Hamilton\, David Sanborn and Dave Stryker. He also teaches jazz guitar and music theory through private lessons. \nWilson’s career took him on an exploratory journey into foundations laid down by the guitar/organ tradition\, eventually leading to an invitation to perform with jazz great Joey DeFrancesco’s trio quartet\, with which Wilson went on to earn a GRAMMY® Award nomination with for DeFrancesco’s Project Freedom album (Mack Avenue Records\, 2017). \nThis collaboration allowed the guitarist to insert his own dialect into the musical prowess and respect that DeFrancesco had earned throughout his journey. \nWilson had been playing with DeFrancesco for a few years when he met bassist\, composer\, arranger\, Christian McBride. From there\, Wilson went on to tour with McBride’s trio Tip City\, eventually leading McBride to serve as producer on “Vessels of Wood and Earth” and release the album on his newly formed imprint Brother Mister Productions through Mack Avenue Music Group. \nThe album was released on April 23\, 2021 and is available on all platforms.

SUMMARY:This is Not: Aldwyth in Retrospect
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Coastal Discovery Museum will present an exhibition of the rarely seen works of Hilton Head-based artist Aldwyth\, from October 16 to March 23\, 2025.  The public is invited to the opening reception on October 17\, from 5-7 pm. Guest Curator Mark Sloan will give a tour of the exhibition before the reception. \n  \nThis is Not: Aldwyth in Retrospect spans nearly 70 years of her work\, including early examples of photography\, painting\, and fiber\, as well as her later bricolages and epic-scaled\, intricate collages that take viewers on a creative journey through time and space.   Although Aldwyth has lived and worked on Hilton Head since 1967\, her works have rarely been seen in the area. Her unique evolution as an artist is the subject of the documentary\, Aldwyth: Fully Assembled\, by award-winning filmmaker Olympia Stone. The Museum plans to screen the film in early 2025.

These tools aid in the study of Gullah history while allowing students to experience Gullah arts and culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Emory Campbell\n*Former Penn Center Director\, former chair of the Gullah – Geechee Corridor Commission\, co-author of the new book “Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956” and a past member of the Arts Center’s Board of Trustees. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCulture and Foodways\n\n\n\nDaufuskie Island Virtual Gullah Tour with Sallie Ann Robinson\n\n\n\nGullah History and Culture Presentation\nDownload\n\n\nGullah History and Culture Study Guide\nDownload\n\n\nGullah Recipes\nDownload\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts and Traditional Crafts\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Significance of Adinkra Symbols in Gullah Art with Amiri Farris\n\n\n\n\nPreserving the Art of Sweetgrass Basket Sewing with Michael Smalls & Dino Badger\n\n\n\n\nArtist Bios Michael Smalls and Dino Badger\nDownload\n\n\nSweetgrass Word Search\nDownload\n\n\nExploring Printmaking through African Symbols and Textiles Lesson Plan\nDownload\n\n\nUnderstanding How Symbols Communicate Stories and Meaning Presentation\nDownload\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSongs and Stories\n\n\n\nGullah Tales with Anita Singleton Prather\n\n\n\nExploring Gullah Folktales through Puppetry\nDownload\n\n\nGullah Folktales Presentation\nDownload\n\n\nFolktales\nVisit Website\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistorial Sites and PLantation Life\n\n\n\nWhat Tabby Ruins Reveal about Gullah History with Dr. Emory Campbell\n\n\n\nSTEM Activity Engineering Tabby with Rice Cereal Lesson Plan\nDownload\n\n\nHilton Head Island Cultural Trail Map\nVisit Website\n\n\nTabby Slave Cabins: Tabby Demonstration\nWatch Video\n\n\nArchaeological History of Tabby\nVisit Website\n\n\nHeritage Library Presents: Our Storied Island\nVisit Website\n\n\nPenn Center\nVisit Website\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLifestyle and Community\n\n\n\nA Visit to the Gullah Museum with Storyteller Louise Miller Cohen\n\n\n\nMitchelville\nVisit Website\n\n\nOCA – Gullah Celebration Video\nWatch Video\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecommended Gullah Education Books\n\n\n \nA Sweet\, Sweet Basket\nby Margie Clary\n\n\n \nCircle Unbroken\nby Margot Raven\n\n\n \nGullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956\nby Dr. Emory Campbell\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAdditional support is provided by the Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund which is managed by Coastal Community Foundation of S.C.
