SUMMARY:Fences
DESCRIPTION:JAN 31 – FEB 24\, 2024\n\n\n\n\n\nSet in Pittsburgh in the 1950s\, Fences depicts the life of Troy Maxson\, a former Negro League baseball star now scraping by as a sanitation worker. A towering figure facing thwarted aspirations\, Troy attempts to assert control in his life through his relationships with his wife and his son\, who now wants his own chance to play ball. But even as he takes responsibility for their safety and well-being\, he betrays them each in ways that will forever alter their lives. Part of August Wilson’s 10-play Century Cycle\, Fences explores the walls we build around ourselves and our loved ones\, while also illuminating one family’s struggles during this era. \nThe play won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play\, and starred James Earl Jones. \nThe first Broadway revival opened in 2010\, directed by KennyLeon\, and starred Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. The revival was nominated for ten Tony Awards\, winning three for Best Revival of a Play\, Best Actor in a Play (Denzel Washington)\, and Best Actress in a Play (Viola Davis). \nFences is a mesmerizing and important piece of American Theatre. \n‍ \nSponsored by: Pink Magazine\n\n\nBest For Ages:12 and up\n$53/ticket

SUMMARY:Collage Dance Collective (Grades 1-12)
DESCRIPTION:February 29\, 2024\nRecently named a “Southern Cultural Treasure” by SouthArts and Ford Foundation\, Collage Dance has presented thirteen seasons of emotionally evocative performances to local and international audiences and cultivated a love of dance in thousands of students. \nCollage Dance’s founders established the professional dance company in New York City in 2006 in response to the ballet industry’s lack of racial diversity on stage. In 2009\, after moving to Memphis\, Tennessee\, Collage opened its dance conservatory to expand access to classical training to communities of color and prepare them for collegial and professional dance appointments. Collage’s professional dancers serve as role models and cultural ambassadors for the city of Memphis while Collage’s conservatory programs provide a multitude of ways for our community to engage with the fine arts. \n$8/ticket\nBest suited for grade 1-12.
