SUMMARY:Barbara Slavin: Risks and Opportunities in Iran-US Relations
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Slavin is a distinguished fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington and a lecturer in international affairs at George Washington University. Prior to joining Stimson\, she founded and directed the Future of Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council and led a bi-partisan task force on Iran. The author of Bitter Friends\, Bosom Enemies: Iran\, the US and the Twisted Path to Confrontation (2007)\, she is a regular commentator on US foreign policy and Iran on NPR\, PBS and C-Span. \nA career journalist\, Slavin served as a columnist for Al-Monitor; assistant managing editor for world and national security at the Washington Times; senior diplomatic reporter for USA Today; Cairo and Beijing correspondent for The Economist and as an editor at the New York Times Week in Review. She covered such key foreign policy issues as the US-led ‘war on terrorism\,’ policy toward ‘rogue’ states\, the Iran-Iraq war and the Arab-Israeli conflict. She has traveled to Iran nine times. Slavin also served as a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars\, where she wrote Bitter Friends\, and as a senior fellow at the US Institute of Peace\, where she researched and wrote the report\, Mullahs\, Money and Militias: How Iran Exerts Its Influence in the Middle East. \n  \nGuest Policy\nGuests may register in advance for $30 or at the door for $35. SUMMARY:Elizabeth Beavers: How the U.S. Defense Budget shapes Policy and Our Global Reputation
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Beavers is a national security legal scholar and a public interest policy advocate. She most recently served as Vice President for Public Affairs at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Elizabeth also teaches remotely as an adjunct professor of counterterrorism law at the University of New Hampshire’s Franklin Pierce School of Law. Elizabeth’s expertise on national security law and policy is featured frequently on panels\, podcasts\, events\, and in the media. Her analysis has been featured in outlets including The New York Times\, USA Today\, Politico\, Reuters\, and The Guardian. She has previously served as a Senior Fellow with Data For Progress\, and currently serves as Vice President of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture’s board of directors. \nBefore her time at the Quincy Institute\, she ran a consultancy that worked behind the scenes to strengthen leading national advocacy organizations in their work to lobby lawmakers\, organize and train grassroots activists\, and change the public narrative on matters of peace and security. Prior to becoming an independent consultant\, Elizabeth served as Associate Policy Director for the Indivisible Project\, a grassroots movement organizing to influence Congress and build progressive power. Elizabeth led the organization’s advocacy efforts on foreign policy\, national security\, democracy\, and human rights. Before that\, Elizabeth was the Senior Campaigner on national security and human rights for the U.S. section of Amnesty International\, where she worked to reform the U.S. government’s national security policies in line with international human rights standards. Elizabeth also managed the Militarism & Civil Liberties program at the Friends Committee on National Legislation\, a Quaker lobby in public interest. \nElizabeth holds an LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center in National Security with a Certificate in International Human Rights Law. She is a member of the North Carolina State Bar and received her Juris Doctor from Regent University School of Law. Her bachelor’s degree is in public relations and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. \n \nGuest Policy\nGuests may register in advance or at the door for $25.
