The exhibit will be on view through March 23\, 2026. \nThe public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday\, November 13\, from 5 to 7 pm. \nThis retrospective brings together approximately 80 works from private collections and new museum acquisitions. SUMMARY:Barbara Slavin: Risks and Opportunities in Iran-US Relations
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Slavin is a distinguished fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington and a lecturer in international affairs at George Washington University. Prior to joining Stimson\, she founded and directed the Future of Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council and led a bi-partisan task force on Iran. The author of Bitter Friends\, Bosom Enemies: Iran\, the US and the Twisted Path to Confrontation (2007)\, she is a regular commentator on US foreign policy and Iran on NPR\, PBS and C-Span. \nA career journalist\, Slavin served as a columnist for Al-Monitor; assistant managing editor for world and national security at the Washington Times; senior diplomatic reporter for USA Today; Cairo and Beijing correspondent for The Economist and as an editor at the New York Times Week in Review. She covered such key foreign policy issues as the US-led ‘war on terrorism\,’ policy toward ‘rogue’ states\, the Iran-Iraq war and the Arab-Israeli conflict. She has traveled to Iran nine times. Slavin also served as a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars\, where she wrote Bitter Friends\, and as a senior fellow at the US Institute of Peace\, where she researched and wrote the report\, Mullahs\, Money and Militias: How Iran Exerts Its Influence in the Middle East. \n  \nGuest Policy\nGuests may register in advance for $30 or at the door for $35. DESCRIPTION:A new retrospective exhibition\, “It’s Thursday! Artists of the Round Table\,” will celebrate 15 prominent local artists who gathered weekly at The Red Piano Gallery from the 1970s through 1994 to share ideas and projects that nurtured the island’s growing art community. The exhibit will be on view through March 23\, 2026. \nThe public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday\, November 13\, from 5 to 7 pm. \nThis retrospective brings together approximately 80 works from private collections and new museum acquisitions. The Artists of the Round Table include Aldwyth\, Ralph Ballantine\, Joe Bowler\, Danielle DeMers\, Joe DeMers\, Ray Ellis\, Elizabeth Grant\, Walter Greer\, Tua Hayes\, Katy Hodgman\, Louanne LaRoche\, Allen Palmer\, Marge Parker\, George Plante\, and Coby Whitmore. \nThe museum is offering free curator’s tours of the exhibit on the following dates:\nTuesday\, December 16\, at 1 pm; Thursday\, January 22\, at 1 pm; Tuesday\, February 24\, at 11 am; and Saturday\, March 14\, at 11 am. \n“We are thrilled to present this historically significant exhibition that captures a remarkable time in Hilton Head’s art community\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions. “I would have loved to have been at their Thursday meetings and listened to these influential artists talk about their craft.” \nVisitors can see memorabilia\, photographs\, books\, and articles about the artists\, including articles by Theodore F. Wolff\, art critic for The Christian Science Monitor — a favorite of the Round Table. \nAlso on view in the gallery is the original red grand piano\, on loan from artist Louanne LaRoche\, former owner of The Red Piano Gallery\, and the round wooden table where the artists gathered on Thursday mornings. DESCRIPTION:Freedom Day 2026: Mitchelville Hosts Conversation on the “Freedom to Learn: Education as Liberation\,” with Ellen Weaver\, SC State Superintendent of Education \n  \nHistoric Mitchelville Freedom Park will host Freedom Day 2026 on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026\, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the park\, located at 40 Harriet Tubman Way\, Hilton Head Island\, SC 29926. This free community gathering will honor Mitchelville’s legacy as the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States\, and the first known community to require education for children in South Carolina through the theme: “Freedom to Learn: Education as Liberation Then\, Now\, and Next.” \nFreedom Day 2026 will feature a high-impact panel conversation on education\, equity\, and leadership—with Ellen E. Weaver\, South Carolina’s 19th State Superintendent of Education\, who will join fellow distinguished education leaders from K–12 and higher education. The program will be emceed by Dr. Erica S. SUMMARY:Mitchelville & The Gullah Museum: Foundations of Freedom and Memory
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, February 10\, we turn to stories rooted in Mitchelville\, Freedom Town\, and the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island. \nMitchelville was one of the first self-governing towns established by formerly enslaved people in America — on Hilton Head Island during the Civil War — where residents elected officials\, passed by-laws\, and built a community from the ground up. \nMeanwhile\, the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head (founded in 2003 by local Native Islander Louise Miller Cohen) preserves and shares Gullah history\, customs\, stories\, and art for visitors and for descendants seeking connection to their heritage. \nThis evening will explore how the resilient spirit of Mitchelville and the Museum’s mission together anchor the Gullah story — not just as history\, but as a living\, breathing tradition. \n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket & Attendance Details \n\n\nSingle-session tickets will be available for each evening for $30 per person \n\n\nSeries ticket (all three sessions) includes two complimentary tickets to the Gullah Celebration Village at the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival on February 28\, 1:00–5:00 pm. Artists of the Round Table\,” will celebrate 15 prominent local artists who gathered weekly at The Red Piano Gallery from the 1970s through 1994 to share ideas and projects that nurtured the island’s growing art community. The exhibit will be on view through March 23\, 2026. \nThe public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday\, November 13\, from 5 to 7 pm. \nThis retrospective brings together approximately 80 works from private collections and new museum acquisitions.
