DESCRIPTION:Art League of Hilton Head will present From Their Spirit\, By Their Hands—Gullah Geechee Traditions in Art\, a powerful February exhibition honoring the rich artistic traditions of the Gullah Geechee people. \nThe exhibition is held each February to recognize and preserve the history\, culture\, and contributions of the Gullah Geechee community. Featuring work by 38 artists\, the exhibit showcases a wide range of artistic expressions rooted in heritage\, storytelling\, craftsmanship\, and spiritual connection. \n“This exhibit is about honoring lineage and lived experience\,” said Cora Miller\, exhibit docent. “Each piece reflects traditions that have been passed down through generations—art created not only by hand\, but by spirit\, memory\, and deep cultural pride.” \nThrough painting\, mixed media\, and traditional forms\, From Their Spirit\, By Their Hands invites viewers to experience the visual language of Gullah Geechee culture and its enduring influence on the Lowcountry. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, February 10\, we turn to stories rooted in Mitchelville\, Freedom Town\, and the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island. \nMitchelville was one of the first self-governing towns established by formerly enslaved people in America — on Hilton Head Island during the Civil War — where residents elected officials\, passed by-laws\, and built a community from the ground up. \nMeanwhile\, the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head (founded in 2003 by local Native Islander Louise Miller Cohen) preserves and shares Gullah history\, customs\, stories\, and art for visitors and for descendants seeking connection to their heritage. \nThis evening will explore how the resilient spirit of Mitchelville and the Museum’s mission together anchor the Gullah story — not just as history\, but as a living\, breathing tradition. \n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket & Attendance Details \n\n\nSingle-session tickets will be available for each evening for $30 per person \n\n\nSeries ticket (all three sessions) includes two complimentary tickets to the Gullah Celebration Village at the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival on February 28\, 1:00–5:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Coastal Discovery Museum and NIBCAA Present Gullah Celebration at 30: Posters from the Archive \nThe Coastal Discovery Museum\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, in partnership with the Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association (NIBCAA)\, presents Gullah Celebration at 30: Posters from the Archive\, on view from January 10 through March 8\, 2026\, in the museum’s Sea Island Gallery. \nThe exhibition is part of the 2026 Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration\, a month-long series of events honoring the cultural heritage of the Gullah Geechee community. The public is invited to a reception at the museum on Thursday\, February 5\, from 5–7 pm. \nMarking the festival’s 30th anniversary\, the exhibition features more than 20 posters\, including the first poster by Joe Pinckney and the 2026 poster by Amiri Farris. \n“It’s an honor to collaborate with NIBCAA on this exhibition of posters by important regional artists\, including Jonathan Green\, James Denmark\, and Diane Britton Dunham\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions at the Coastal Discovery Museum. “Bringing these posters together for the first time\, you can see different artists’ designs and themes for the Gullah Celebration over the years.” \nAngela Dore\, NIBCAA’s curator of the exhibit and Director of Experiential Learning at the Penn Center National Historic Landmark District\, noted the importance of documenting the annual celebration through visual art. “Each poster tells a story about the spirit of the Gullah Celebration and the need to preserve Gullah culture.” \nThis year’s poster by Amiri Farris will be available for purchase\, giving visitors an opportunity to take home a piece of the festival’s history. \nFounded in 1996\, the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration was created to honor\, preserve\, and share the cultural heritage of its Native Islanders.
