SUMMARY:Documentary Film: Purple Haze
DESCRIPTION:SAT10\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 10 @ 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm EST\nDocumentary Film: Purple Haze\nHilton Head Library\n\n\nFree Public Welcome \nThis film follows one man’s journey chasing America’s favorite backyard bird\, the Purple Martin\, halfway around the world and back. \nAfter millions of years of evolution\, treacherous migrations\, and forming a unique relationship with humans\, North America’s largest swallow species\, the Purple Martin\, has managed to become almost completely dependent on man-made nesting structures to nest & rear their young. Captain Zach Steinhauser has taken it upon himself\, after spending years guiding folks to North America’s largest Purple Martin roost\, to chase these birds across their range to understand exactly how this species put themselves in this position and discover a lost culture of bird-loving enthusiasts across the Purple Martin’s range. Zach’s journey takes him across the western hemisphere from the Great Lakes to the Amazon Rainforest all the way to the Sonoran Desert making unexpected connections at every turn.

SUMMARY:Freedom Day | Exploring the Families of Historic Mitchelville & Harriet Tubman | From the Railroad to a Spy - Documentary Screenings
DESCRIPTION:One Night\, Two Exciting Documentaries! February 4th & 18th at 6 PM \nFreedom Day | Exploring the Families of Historic Mitchelville is an epic documentary that chronicles the foundations of the Freedom Day holiday as it follows the journey to freedom of the first families of Hilton Head Island as they experienced it\, from the past into today. Surrounded by hostile forces that wanted to maintain the institution of slavery\, the families were able to become self-sufficient and independent in the Town of Mitchelville\, the first self-governed and fully functioning town in the US for freedmen\, which was established in 1862\, three years prior to the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. \nLearn about their daring escapes towards freedom\, their loyalty and dedication to the Union Army\, as well as their incredible contributions as United States Colored Troop soldiers. As new citizens\, the formerly enslaved Gullah established their independence alongside all of the famous people who came to Hilton Head Island\, including Harriet Tubman and Clara Barton\, who among others\, were instrumental in helping the Union Army turn the direction of the Civil War towards victory. \nHarriett Tubman was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. She also came to Hilton Head and Beaufort and was the first black woman to be a part of US military operations\, including the Combahee River Raid\, which rescued over 750 enslaved people. Journey through her incredible life story at the premiere of the documentary\, Harriett Tubman | From the Railroad to a Spy. \nAll proceeds benefit the Lowcountry Gullah Foundation | Historic Gullah Land Preservation Program. \nFor more information on saving Gullah land – www.historiclandpreservation.org
