Joey later remarked to Hancock\, “You told me that you believed in me\, and that was the day I decided to dedicate my childhood to jazz.”\nAt nine\, Joey won the grand prize at the first Master-Jam Fest\, an all-ages competition in Ukraine which included 200 competitors from 17 countries. As a young child\, every time he saw a piano he would run up to it and bang on the keys. Acknowledging his obvious attraction to the instrument\, Joshua’s parents started their young child out on the Suzuki method with private lessons at home around age 5. Joshua continued to train classically throughout his childhood and teenage years through private lessons at Stetson University until he began high school. He credits both his high school band director Andrew Kidd and local jazz pianist/teacher Harold Blanchard for sparking his interest in jazz. Noticing his strong passion and dedication to this American art form\, his teachers and peers awarded him with the prestigious Louis Armstrong Jazz Award upon graduation. Starting in 2002\, Bowlus continued his jazz education at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville\, studying under pianists Kevin Bales & Keith Javors. The head of UNF jazz and extraordinary alto saxophonist Bunky Green served as Joshua’s primary mentor through his later years in college. Since graduating from UNF in 2006\, he has built his career as a jazz pianist while residing in Jacksonville\, acting as both a bandleader for his own groups as well as a sideman for various other groups.\nJoshua’s music has allowed him to perform in multiple popular jazz festivals and venues around the country\, including the Jacksonville Jazz Fest\, the Savannah Jazz Fest\, the Monterey Jazz Fest\, Kokopelli’s Jazz Club\, B-Sharp’s Jazz Cafe\, The Jazz Corner\, and Iridium Jazz Club in NYC. He has also performed in a number of other locations around the globe\, including France\, Spain\, and China. As the pianist for the UNF Jazz Ensemble One during his college years\, the band played a two-week concert tour of China\, and was the first jazz big band to perform on the Great Wall of China.\nWhile currently still residing in Jacksonville\, Joshua currently performs locally as the bandleader for The Joshua Bowlus Trio (or Quartet)\, and plays regularly in local venues such as The Parlour\, The Grotto\, Underbelly\, The Brick\, Rhett’s Piano Bar\, & the Mudville Music Room. He has performed on random occasions with numerous well-known jazz artists on the scene including Wynton Marsalis\, Bunky Green\, Christian McBride\, Ulysses Owens\, Barry Greene\, Dennis Marks\, Danny Gottlieb\, Annie Sellick\, John Lee\, Yotam Silberstein\, Doc Handy\, Lisa Kelly\, & J.B. Scott. Bowlus collaborates regularly with singing sensation Linda Cole\, who is a family member of the Nat King Cole dynasty. Joshua is the regular pianist for the Kelly/Scott Quintet based out of Jacksonville\, and is also a member of the Jazz Conceptions Orchestra\, a NYC-based 9-piece jazz ensemble. The JCO released their debut album in October 2008 and performs on occasion in both the NYC and Southeast regions. More recently he has joined the Jax Jazz Collective\, a modern jazz sextet preparing to release their 2nd album in 2015. Joshua has recorded as a sideman with many other celebrated musicians on their own projects\, including tenor saxophonist John Ricci\, electric bass prodigy Jon Reshard\, fusion guitarist Greg Howe\, and world-renowned drummer Dave Weckl. Joshua has developed his own unique voice in the jazz world\, and has recently released his first official album as a bandleader in collaboration with vocalist Linda Cole under his own record label\, J-Bo Records.\nVisit Joshua at joshuabowlusmusic.com\nMUSIC CHARGE: $20.00\nREQUEST A RESERVATION URL:https://culturehhi.org/event/the-joshua-bowlus-trio-2/ LOCATION:The Jazz Corner\, 1000 William Hilton Pkwy\, Hilton Head Island\, 29928\, United States\, 300 William Hilton Pkwy\, United States CATEGORIES:Featured,Music GEO:32.174466;-80.732526 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=The Jazz Corner 1000 William Hilton Pkwy Hilton Head Island 29928 United States 300 William Hilton Pkwy United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=300 William Hilton Pkwy:geo:-80.732526,32.174466 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20181203T173000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20181203T183000 DTSTAMP:20240601T101519 CREATED:20181128T132902Z LAST-MODIFIED:20181128T132902Z UID:14554-1543858200-1543861800@culturehhi.org SUMMARY:Lighting of the Big Oak Tree and 5th Anniversary Celebration of Toni Morrison Bench in Mitchelville DESCRIPTION: URL:https://culturehhi.org/event/lighting-of-the-big-oak-tree-and-5th-anniversary-celebration-of-toni-morrison-bench-in-mitchelville/ LOCATION:SC CATEGORIES:Featured,Gullah,History,Live Music,Things To Do END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=UTC:20190105T193000 DTEND;TZID=UTC:20190105T223000 DTSTAMP:20240601T101519 CREATED:20190101T214536Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190105T214434Z UID:14958-1546716600-1546727400@culturehhi.org SUMMARY:The KEVIN BALES Quartet featuring Vibraphonist CHUCK REDD DESCRIPTION:Grammy Nominated Jazz Pianist & Composer ~ KEVIN BALES ~ Musician\, Teacher\, Performer ~\nBy some measures\, Kevin Bales was a latecomer to jazz\, already 17 when he encountered the sounds and structures and became captivated by the freedom and corresponding challenges of the music. But if late to the party\, he wasted no time in immersing himself in the celebration\, declaring total commitment to what would be his life’s work and backing his announcement by resigning his job and designated career in computer programming.\nKevin could commit to jazz with a reasonable degree of expectation. He was already an accomplished pianist\, with classical chops refined since the age of 10. So accomplished he was invited to audition for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra\, then under the direction of its most storied conductor Robert Shaw\, at age 16.\nKevin’s initial career move was to the University of North Florida and a budding if little-known jazz program. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet\, Gransden’s singing voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra.  “When I first heard Joe nine years ago\, I immediately thought of Chet\,” says Jazziz magazine critic James Rozzi\, “but lately his voice has taken on its own style with a deeper resonance. His trumpet has always alternated lyricism with an aggressive\, angular approach. He has the ability to cover the gamut of emotions.”  Joe is from just north of Manhattan\, New York. Coming from a family full of musicians\, Joe’s introduction to music came early on through his father\, a gifted singer and pianist.  His grandfather was a trumpeter of merit\, playing professionally his whole life throughout New York. On his mother’s side of the family was the piano virtuoso Carmen Cavallero.\n“Music has been a part of my life as far back as I can remember\,” says the unassuming Joe Gransden. “I can remember practicing with my father\, and eventually him taking me along to sit in at jam sessions. Early on I developed a respect for individuals like my father whose lives revolved around music. While still in high school\, I knew that music was the life I would choose.”\nNot long after high school\, Joe was on the road as a sideman with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. A number of A.F.M. contracted sideman gigs include Barry White\, The Moody Blues\, Kenny Rogers\, The Temptations\, Aretha Franklin\, The Whispers\, etc. Eventually moving to New York City\, he performed with numerous groups\, including sub work with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Chico O’Farrill at the famous Birdland Jazz Club. Meanwhile\, Joe formed his own group\, which performed in Brooklyn each week and included the venerable guitarist Joe Cohn and ex-Betty Carter bassist\, Matt Hughes. “Having my own group and being fortunate enough to travel\, play\, and record has been a dream come true\,” says Joe.\n“Exploring the music with a steady group of great players has enabled me to continually grow.” Joe Gransden growing legion of fans around the country have obviously taken note. In Atlanta\, where Joe plays steadily 5-6 nights a week in as many venues\, his loyal following includes an array of people from blue-collar workers to upper crust businessmen and businesswomen who all share a love of good music.  Like many developing jazzmen\, Gransden’s early influences\, which include Kenny Dorham and Miles Davis\, were easily recognizable in his playing throughout his formative years. “Emulating the jazz greats is always the very first step\,” says the historically-rooted Gransden. “But obviously\, in order to be true to myself—who I am\, what I believe in\, my family background—I need to have a sound that’s my own. It’s taken me until recently to hone in on that voice and explore its potential. One of the truly enjoyable things about my career has been finding that my audience appreciates my individual talents.”\nA widening schedule has found Joe performing the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month at Café 290 in Atlanta w/his 16 Piece Big Band \, The Blue Note in New York City\, The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head SC\, The Ritz-Carlton at Reynolds Plantation W/Michael Fienstein\, The Museum of Art and Design in midtown Manhattan\, Spivey Hall in Atlanta\, Ga and Tehema Golf Club in Carmel\, California (where Joe plays occasional events for Clint Eastwood). Joe also released his cd “Close To My Heart” produced by Saxophone great Kenny G. The cd is a collection of smooth jazz covers and originals written by Joe and Kenny. His brand new project entitled “Songs of Sinatra & Friends” features Joe w/his 16 piece Big Band & Strings Celebrating the music of Frank Sinatra!  The CD and has been getting great reviews and lots of airplay around the country.\nMUSIC CHARGE: $20\nREQUEST A RESERVATION URL:https://culturehhi.org/event/the-joe-gransden-quartet-2/ LOCATION:The Jazz Corner\, 1000 William Hilton Pkwy\, Hilton Head Island\, 29928\, United States\, 300 William Hilton Pkwy\, United States CATEGORIES:Featured,Music GEO:32.174466;-80.732526 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=The Jazz Corner 1000 William Hilton Pkwy Hilton Head Island 29928 United States 300 William Hilton Pkwy United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=300 William Hilton Pkwy:geo:-80.732526,32.174466 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20190118T193000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20190118T223000 DTSTAMP:20240601T101519 CREATED:20190101T214544Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190118T221453Z UID:14971-1547839800-1547850600@culturehhi.org SUMMARY:"A Salute to Lester Young & Pee Wee Russell" The Kris Tokarski Trio featuring Clarinetist\, Saxophonist\, Composer/Arranger Jon Doyle & Legendary New Orleans Percussionist Hal Smith DESCRIPTION:“A Salute to Lester Young & Pee Wee Russell” ~ The Kris Tokarski Trio featuring Clarinetist\, Saxophonist\, Composer/Arranger Jon Doyle & Legendary New Orleans Percussionist Hal Smith\n \nKris Tokarski was born and raised just outside of New York City\, in East Rutherford\, New Jersey. From GRAMMY-award winning performances with Christian McBride’s acclaimed Trio and Big Band to world tours with Kurt Elling and Joey Alexander\, Owens’s artistic command of percussion has earned him positions in some of the most successful jazz ensembles of the 21st century. Owens’s reverence for tradition distinctly manifests in his straight-away playing style\, but it is the versatility of his talent— his unique ability to manipulate texture and create penetrating musical shapes— that attracts the attention of jazz’s heavy hitters. His performance catalog includes collaborations with Nicholas Payton\, Wynton Marsalis\, Monty Alexander\, Dianne Schuur\, Russell Malone\, Renee Fleming and Mulgrew Miller\, just to name a few.\nA burgeoning force in the industry\, Owens has been named a Rising Star by DownBeat’s Critics Poll for five years straight. He is a recipient of the 2013 ASCAP Plus Award\, a gold medal winner of the 2014 Global Music Awards and a 2015 Jazz at Lincoln Center Swing Award honoree. Still\, most notable of Owens’s accomplishments are his performances on the 2010 GRAMMY-award winning Kurt Elling live album\, Dedicated to You\, and the 2012 GRAMMY-award winning Christian McBride Big Band album\, The Good Feeling. His work with Joey Alexander and the Christian McBride Trio has also received recognition by the Academy\, garnering GRAMMY nominations for My Favorite Things\, Out Here\, and Live at the Village Vanguard.\nAt the heart of Owens’s work is a passion for creation and the desire to reach new audiences. On and off stage\, music emanates from every inch of his being\, and no performance goes unmarked by Owens’s signature smile. Owens is a gifted bandleader\, claiming three successful albums of his own (It’s Time for U\, Unanimous\, and Onward and Upward) and three self-produced albums with the New Century Jazz Quintet (Time is Now\, In Case You Missed Us\, and Arise)\, a skillful group he co-leads with pianist Takeshi Ohbayashi. This band-first philosophy reassures Owens that the conversation with the audience remains fluid and focused\, another stamp of his seasoned expertise and professional sophistication.\nAmidst touring\, Owens is regularly involved in special projects. In 2015\, he served as Artist-in-Residence at the Park Avenue Armory Conservancy where he presented Ulysses in 3. This multi-disciplinary performance piece showcased the literary masterpiece Ulysses by James Joyce\, the work of celebrated choreographer Ulysses Dove and Owens’s own original compositions\, weaved together through the mediums of music\, dance\, spoken word and visual art. That same year\, Owens was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art to compose a work for the Museum’s Summergarden Series. The final result was a seven-movement suite entitled Stages of Us reflecting on the African American experience.\nA strong believer in community engagement\, Owens has ardently supported cultural institutions. From 2012 to 2015\, Owens served as the Jazz Vesper Series Artistic Director at the world-renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church. He was also appointed Artistic Music Curator for the legendary Minton’s Playhouse\, at the request of restaurateur Alexander Smalls\, producing over 85 shows for the jazz club during its 2015 fall season. His first major production as Music Director came the following year with Songs of Freedom\, which debuted in the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The tribute piece honored musical greats Abbey Lincoln\, Nina Simone\, and Joni Mitchell and featured vocalists Alicia Olatuja\, Theo Bleckmann and jazz royalty Dee Dee Bridgewater. The success of Songs of Freedom\, which was highlighted for its message of “hope and progress” by The New York Times\, only further certifies Owens’s years of experience music directing on smaller stages for creations of his own and other artists alike.\nOwens is also making a name for himself in production circles\, having accumulated over 30 producer credits in just a few short years. His production of Olivia Foschi’s Perennial Dreamer was described by JazzTimes as “fresh\, innovative\, and refreshingly uplifting…appealing to a new generation of listeners\, while still honoring jazz as a tradition.” The Owens-produced Abiah album\, Life as A Ballad\, debuted at #20 on the Billboard charts\, and his production of Candice Hoyes’s album\, On a Turquoise Cloud\, was named one of the best albums of 2015 by SoulTrain.com. Click here for more info about UOJ Productions.\nOwens’s steadfast belief that “music is a universal language with the ability to heal the soul\,” coupled with his commitment to disseminating art\, is encapsulated no greater than in his lifelong career educating music’s next generation of leaders. In 2016\, Owens was invited by Wynton Marsalis and Aaron Flagg of the Juilliard School’s Jazz Studies Program\, Owens’s alma mater\, to join the institution’s esteemed faculty as an instructor for small ensembles. Despite spending the greater part of his calendar year on the road\, Owens also remains tightly connected to his hometown of Jacksonville\, Florida where his family founded Don’t Miss a Beat\, Inc.\, a non-profit organization empowering young people to dream big and give back to their communities through a blend of musical\, artistic\, academic\, and civic engagement programming. As DMAB Artistic Director\, Owens has created programs for over 200 children and teens\, including a cross-cultural exchange that gives students the opportunity to experience art and culture abroad. Having had the fortune of dedicated mentors throughout his career\, Owens’s interest in investing in young people’s education and self-esteem is a deeply personal cause and one essential to his vision of pushing art forward.\n2017 will see the continued emergence of Owens as a dexterous leader in music. THREE\, Owens’s forthcoming album featuring bassist Reuben Rogers and vibraphonist Joel Ross\, is queued for release this summer. Touring for this album\, along with Songs and a senior studio album in-the-making by New Century\, will take place this fall. Unlike many of his contemporaries\, Allen has generally eschewed the modern\, avant-garde\, and impressionist schools of jazz of John Coltrane\, Archie Shepp\, and Ornette Coleman. Born in Washington\, D.C. in 1966\, Allen grew up in a musical family as the son of big-band drummer Maurice Allen. He started off with accordion lessons before there was a fortuitous switch to saxophone. Attending Rutgers University\, Allen studied with Sahib Shihab\, Bob Mintzer\, and John Purcell.\nWhile there\, he got his first gig with the help of master bass player Major Holley\, replacing Zoot Sims in a studio recording with John Bunch\, George Masso\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, and Ruby Braff. Wholley also led Allen to Oliver Jackson\, whom Allen subsequently accompanied on several tours to Europe. A 1986 session with Kenny Barron was Allen’s first recording date. After that\, Allen made his debut as a leader on 1988’s How Long Has This Been Going On?\nFrom there\, he delivered a steady stream of recordings under his name for such labels as Progressive\, Audiophile\, and Nagel-Heyer. Later\, his recordings were with major-label RCA-Victor\, including 1999’s Harry Allen Meets the John Pizzarelli Trio and 2000’s Plays Ellington Songs. Three of his albums were awarded a Gold Disc by Swing Journal magazine\, and his CD Tenors Anyone won both the Gold Disc and New Star awards. He has also recorded as a sideman with Bucky Pizzarelli (with whom he performs quite frequently)\, Warren Vache\, and Jeff Hamilton.\nAllen continues to record extensively and makes frequent appearances at jazz festivals and concerts. Highly prolific\, he delivered a slew of well-regarded albums for BMG in the 2000s before moving back to boutique labels like Arbors\, Sackville Records\, and Challenge for albums like 2007’s Cocktails for Two with Joe Temperley\, 2009’s New York State of Mind\, and 2010’s When Larry Met Harry with pianist Larry Goldings. He then paired with longtime associate Scott Hamilton for 2012’s ‘Round Midnight\, and explored bossa nova rhythms on 2015’s Something About Jobim. The following year he delivered The Candy Men: Harry Allen’s All-Star New York Saxophone Band\, featuring fellow saxophonists Grant Stewart\, Eric Alexander\, and Gary Smulyan.\n \nMUSIC CHARGE: $20.00\nREQUEST A RESERVATION URL:https://culturehhi.org/event/the-harry-allen-quartet-2/ LOCATION:The Jazz Corner\, 1000 William Hilton Pkwy\, Hilton Head Island\, 29928\, United States\, 300 William Hilton Pkwy\, United States CATEGORIES:Featured,Music GEO:32.174466;-80.732526 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=The Jazz Corner 1000 William Hilton Pkwy Hilton Head Island 29928 United States 300 William Hilton Pkwy United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=300 William Hilton Pkwy:geo:-80.732526,32.174466 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
