SUMMARY:Harbour Town Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Spirit of Beginning \n  \nThe Harbour Town Lighthouse has stood for more than 50 years as a beacon and a symbol of the creative spirit of Charles Fraser. The Sea Pines founder and visionary is laid to rest under the Liberty Oak facing the Lighthouse he built as a welcome to all who come to visit or stay a lifetime. It has become a part of the story people take home with them\, an essential symbol of the dreams that have come true here. No matter how often you come to Hilton Head Island\, the Harbour Town Lighthouse is a must-do experience. \nA visit to Hilton Head Island without a visit to the Harbour Town Lighthouse has been described as\, “like going to Paris and not seeing the Eifel Tower. It’s not just a landmark – although it is all of that – the Lighthouse is the single strongest symbol of Hilton Head Island. It is the image that says it all. Everyone from visitors to publishers to movie-makers pictures the Lighthouse\, when Hilton Head Island is the topic. There are a host of good reasons for that. \n  \nHow the Story is Told \n  \nThe Lighthouse has been so effective at telling the story of Hilton Head Island\, that it was designated an Official Coast Guard Museum. The Coast Guard display features a 1:5 scale model of the “Eagle\,” the historic 295-foot cutter that serves as a seagoing classroom for Coast Guard cadets. The ship’s original plans were used in the construction of the 16-foot\, hand-built model\, a truly amazing work of art. \n  \nViewing the Paradise Beyond \n  \nThe Lighthouse Museum features a Daufuskie Island display consisting of artifacts and a taste of the curious\, mystical story of Daufuskie. From the pottery of prehistoric civilizations to the refined\, sea island sensibility of Haig Point. From Native Americans through Spanish explorers through the tenacious families who stayed on through thick and thin to enjoy the beauty of life on this “paradise beyond\,” the Daufuskie Island display in the Lighthouse is a trip worth taking. \nFrom pre-history and native peoples to the life and times at Sea Pines over the years\, a visit through the lighthouse has become a fascinating climb through the history of Hilton Head Island. There’s something fun to learn on every landing. And there is a state-of-the-art webcam on the top so you can call your friends and family wherever they are\, have them link up to the Lighthouse web site to see you in action on the observation deck.

SUMMARY:Painting the Stories: Glimpses of Gullah by Samantha Claar
DESCRIPTION:Painting the Stories at Art League this Summer \nLocal favorite Samantha Claar to showcase her recent work \n  \nSamantha Claar’s work portraying the Gullah-Geechee lifestyle will be on view this July and August at Art League of Hilton Head. The boldly colored paintings\, often painted on recycled or salvaged materials\, are inspired by Claar’s dreams or “nighttime roamings.” “They visited and demanded that I paint what they were showing me…We argued about this for a long time because I had never painted a human figure…but they were very sure. That is how my love for the Gullah-Geechee and their unique culture was born.” \n  \nClaar is a self-taught artist who began painting in her 40s. She joined the art scene on Tybee Island in the 1990s\, where she opened a gallery with a friend. Once she began dreaming of the Gullah-Geechee and their stories\, she educated herself about the people and their history so she could better “paint the stories” and\, in turn\, educate the people who visited her gallery and had a desire to know more. In 2012\, she opened Fine Folk Galleries\, the first Gullah art market in Savannah’s City Market. \n  \nClaar celebrates the Southern lifestyle that can be traced back to Gullah contributions. The cities built with their labor\, their foods\, their knowledge of the sea and tide\, of fishing methods and sustainable use of land and sea. “Trace our ‘Southern roots’ and there you find the G-G as the root system that made it all possible\,” she says. \n  \n“I want you to take this with you: Wow! I never realized\, assimilated\, or understood just how much my life was impacted by the introduction of the Gullah-Geechee and the rich\, vibrant culture that they crafted in the midst of unspeakable conditions…While looking at my work: I want you to experience the joy of being a fellow human with these remarkable people.” \n  \nPainting the Stories runs July 23 through August 23. An opening reception will be held Wednesday\, July 24\, 5-7pm. Claar will also host a Gallery Walk on Thursday\, July 25\, at 11am\, where she will discuss her work\, influences\, and processes. The exhibit\, reception and gallery walk are free and open to the public. \n  \nWHAT: \nPainting the Stories: Glimpses of Gullah by Samantha Claar \n  \nWHEN: \nExhibit: Tuesday\, July 23 through Friday\, August 23\, 2024. We conclude our journey with a close encounter and ghost story about the “haunted lighthouse” and then return to Harbour Town for a treasure hunt. \nThe cost is $33 per adult and $28 per child (kids two and under are free!) and tickets may be available 30 minutes before the cruise on the Harbor Town dock behind the lighthouse OR IN ADVANCE online using this link.
