SUMMARY:Secret Gardens of the Low Country: Paintings by Judy Blahut
DESCRIPTION:Art League of Hilton Head will present Secret Gardens of the Low Country\, a lush and immersive exhibit featuring paintings in acrylic paint\, charcoal\, watercolor and mixed media by acclaimed artist Judy Blahut. The exhibit will be on view March 3 through April 3 at Art League Gallery\, with an opening reception on Wednesday\, March 4\, from 5–7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. \nInspired by the layered beauty of the Lowcountry landscape\, Blahut’s work invites viewers into intimate garden spaces both cultivated and wild\, where color\, movement\, and light intertwine. Drawing influence from artists such as Henri Matisse and Georgia O’Keeffe\, Blahut’s paintings balance expressive color with fractured forms\, distilling nature to its essential forms and emotional resonance. \nTo help viewers better understand her work\, Blahut is holding an in-depth artist talk on Wednesday\, March 11\, 10:30-11:30am\, and an artist demo on Wednesday\, March 18\, 10:30-11:30am. Both events are free and open to the public. \n“I want to draw the viewer to the incredible flora that is everywhere on our island. Everything from a home garden to the maritime forest and the seaside dunes\,” says Blahut. “I love the tangled mess that happens in the understory of a planted environment. My paintings are about the movement of the plants and the way that light ignites the colors. I believe it is a life skill to see the beauty in the mess.” \nFormally trained with a BFA from Syracuse University\, Blahut has been painting nearly her entire life. Though her subject matter has evolved over the years\, her distinctive style remains constant\, an expressive visual language shaped by observation\, emotion\, and a lifelong devotion to painting. \n

DESCRIPTION:Layers of Life: \nArtwork by Debi West \nLocal artist and longtime art educator Debi West brings Layers of Life to the Art League Gallery this April. Showcasing more than forty years of creative exploration\, the exhibition revisits and transforms works from her personal archive\, turning past canvases\, photographs\, and surfaces into renewed expressions. Emphasizing curiosity\, reflection\, and the evolving nature of art\, Layers of Life encourages viewers to engage with each piece as part of a living process where meaning grows and shifts over time. \n“Layers of Life is a conversation between who I was\, who I am\, and who I am still becoming. It is both a personal archive and a shared experience\,” says West. “Rather than leaving earlier pieces behind\, I return to them—recycling\, reworking\, and reimagining them—so that nothing is erased and each layer carries traces of what came before\, reflecting how meaning accumulates through experience\, reflection\, and time.” \nWith more than four decades in the visual arts\, West has built a career shaped by both studio practice and art education. She spent 25 years teaching in Gwinnett County\, Georgia—including 10 years as Fine Arts Department Chair at North Gwinnett High School—before transitioning into educational consulting and graduate instruction\, where she continues to mentor educators through her writing and teaching. \nA nationally recognized artist and retired art educator\, West has exhibited her work nationwide. She was named National Elementary Art Educator\, National Southeastern Secondary Art Educator\, and Distinguished Fellow of the National Art Education Association\, and has authored more than 200 articles and several books. \nWith Layers of Life\, West invites visitors to engage directly with the work. “As an art educator\, I have always believed that art is most powerful when it invites participation\,” she says. “Visitors are invited to contribute images\, marks\, and ideas\, collectively building a piece that will shift and metamorphosize throughout the course of the exhibition.” \nOpening Reception April 15 from 5-7 pm \nArtist Meet & Greet/Demo April 15 from 1-3pm \nClasses April 22 5-7 pm and April 25 10-4pm \n
