SUMMARY:Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail
DESCRIPTION:Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail connects Shelter Cove Community Park and Shelter Cove Veterans’ Memorial Park to a new trailhead parking area. The trail features a temporary display of public art sculptures. Permanent and temporary sculptures incorporating Island wildlife and environmental themes are installed along the trail. Temporary pieces will be changed every 12-18 months. \nThe trail is a public pathway network along Broad Creek and Shelter Cove Lane. The pathways along Broad Creek provide spectacular views of the salt marsh. In the future\, it will be connected to the proposed Chaplin Linear Park. DESCRIPTION:Art Beyond Tradition Group Returns to the Coastal Discovery Museum for Biennial Exhibit \nThe Coastal Discovery Museum\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, will present Deliberately Unpredictable\, a new exhibition by the Art Beyond Tradition Group.  This biennial show features 12 Lowcountry abstract artists working in various media\, including painting\, collage\, encaustic\, sculpture\, mixed media\, and ink.  Admission is free. \nThe public is invited to attend an opening reception on Thursday\, September 11\, from 5 to 7 pm. A gallery walk with participating artists will take place on Thursday\, September 25\, at 11 am. \nThe Coastal Discovery Museum has hosted several exhibitions by the Art Beyond Tradition Group\, most recently the 2022 show Interpretations. Formed in 2006\, the group was created by a handful of local artists seeking to bring more attention to abstract art in the Lowcountry. \n“This show brings together artists who work independently yet share a commitment to experimenting to push the boundaries of the ordinary\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions at the Coastal Discovery Museum. \nParticipating artists in Deliberately Unpredictable include:\nCindy Chiappetta\, Arla Wible\, Vickie Jourdan\, Sharon Licata\, Mark Larkin\, Margaret Crawford\, Jo Dye\, Earline Allen\, Donna Varner\, Joanna Chalson\, John Crum\, and Linda Tully. \nThe Museum gallery is open Monday through Saturday\, 9 am to 4:30 pm\, and Sunday\, 11 am to 4:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:The Coastal Discovery Museum\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, is presenting “Four Sketchbooks a Year: Celebrating 25 Years of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities\,” a showcase of visual arts by Beaufort County alumni\, on view through January 4\, 2026. \nFounded in 1980 by music teacher Virginia Uldrick as a five-week summer program in Greenville\, SC\, the Governor’s School opened its full-time residential high school in 1999 with 126 students and celebrated its 25th graduating class in 2025. \n“As a curator and parent of a Govie\, it’s been a joy to see such consistently strong work from students in the visual arts program\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions at the Coastal Discovery Museum. “And it’s so rewarding to see how the artists continue to grow in college and beyond.” \nParticipating artists in “Four Sketchbooks”— from the Governor’s School first class through the class of 2026—include:\nEmma Barnes (class of 2010)\, Alex Coley (class of 2024)\, Amelie Davis (class of 2025)\, Evan Ford (class of 2024)\, Alex Gentemann (class of 2021)\, Colleen Gleason (class of 2001)\, Nathaniel Greenberg (class of 2025)\, Kevin Hopkins (class of 2018)\, Tori Lusik (class of 2014)\, Luis Paredes (class of 2026)\, Jack Perry (class of 2007)\, Olivia Ruxton (class of 2005)\, Jessie Peterson Tarazi (class of 2002)\, and Wylder Voegele (class of 2020). \n“We are excited about this opportunity to showcase our program and the work of these talented Beaufort County students\,” said David Gerhard\, Visual Arts Department Chair at the Governor’s School. “These artists embody our department’s mission of giving South Carolina’s young creatives the tools and resources to flourish as artists in an environment centered around respect\, hard work\, creativity\, and connection.”

Participants will learn essential techniques including bead selection and earring assembly. The workshop will take place from Friday\, October 31 through Sunday\, November 2\, 2025\, from 10am to 4pm each day at a pre-determined location on Hilton Head Island\, SC. \nDesigned for intermediate and advanced oil and acrylic painters\, this immersive workshop will focus on the essential elements of painting outdoors. Participants will benefit from a combination of lectures\, demonstrations\, and hands-on practice. Instruction will cover foundational concepts such as drawing\, value\, color\, composition\, and edges\, all integrated into the broader concept of effective painting. Individualized guidance will be provided\, with Marc Hanson working closely with each participant at their own level. \nMarc Hanson\, a Master Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.M.)\, brings decades of experience as a painter and educator. Born in Oxnard\, California\, Hanson’s artistic journey has taken him across the United States and abroad. He studied illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena\, California\, and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally since the early 1980s. Hanson has received multiple Awards of Excellence at the O.P.A. National Exhibit and was awarded the Bronze Medal for Painting at the 2011 OPA National Exhibition. He is also a four-time awardee in The Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100 competition. \nHanson’s teaching philosophy emphasizes helping artists develop their own voice while mastering the principles of representational painting. DESCRIPTION:The Coastal Discovery Museum\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, is presenting “Four Sketchbooks a Year: Celebrating 25 Years of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities\,” a showcase of visual arts by Beaufort County alumni\, on view through January 4\, 2026. \nFounded in 1980 by music teacher Virginia Uldrick as a five-week summer program in Greenville\, SC\, the Governor’s School opened its full-time residential high school in 1999 with 126 students and celebrated its 25th graduating class in 2025. \n“As a curator and parent of a Govie\, it’s been a joy to see such consistently strong work from students in the visual arts program\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions at the Coastal Discovery Museum. “And it’s so rewarding to see how the artists continue to grow in college and beyond.” \nParticipating artists in “Four Sketchbooks”— from the Governor’s School first class through the class of 2026—include:\nEmma Barnes (class of 2010)\, Alex Coley (class of 2024)\, Amelie Davis (class of 2025)\, Evan Ford (class of 2024)\, Alex Gentemann (class of 2021)\, Colleen Gleason (class of 2001)\, Nathaniel Greenberg (class of 2025)\, Kevin Hopkins (class of 2018)\, Tori Lusik (class of 2014)\, Luis Paredes (class of 2026)\, Jack Perry (class of 2007)\, Olivia Ruxton (class of 2005)\, Jessie Peterson Tarazi (class of 2002)\, and Wylder Voegele (class of 2020). \n“We are excited about this opportunity to showcase our program and the work of these talented Beaufort County students\,” said David Gerhard\, Visual Arts Department Chair at the Governor’s School. “These artists embody our department’s mission of giving South Carolina’s young creatives the tools and resources to flourish as artists in an environment centered around respect\, hard work\, creativity\, and connection.”

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to crochet granny squares and then how to connect them together. Students will learn this process and then connect their squares to make a beautiful scarf\, blanket or sweater! \nThis is a fabulous offering for those with some crochet experience\, so join us in this low stress\, encouraging environment and take the first steps into growing your skill! \nNOTE:\nIn addition to the registration fee\, students should bring $45 cash to pay for your materials\, which will all be provided by the instructor. \nSKILL LEVEL:\nThis workshop is designed for students that have had some experience with crochet. As you can see\, the project cost is more extensive\, because the project is larger and entails much more material. If students are taking a 2nd session to finish a project\, a 2nd supply fee will not be charged\, as no additional materials will be needed. If you’ve already taken the class\, Berta will work with you on picking another project to continue working on your skill. Materials fee will very based upon the project you work on. \nREFUND POLICY: \nTicket purchases to Art League of Hilton Head events are final. The trail features a temporary display of public art sculptures. Permanent and temporary sculptures incorporating Island wildlife and environmental themes are installed along the trail. Temporary pieces will be changed every 12-18 months. \nThe trail is a public pathway network along Broad Creek and Shelter Cove Lane. The pathways along Broad Creek provide spectacular views of the salt marsh. In the future\, it will be connected to the proposed Chaplin Linear Park.
