SUMMARY:Conceptual Threads - Art Quilters of the Lowcountry
DESCRIPTION:Conceptual Threads\, a new exhibit by the Art Quilters of the Lowcountry\, a cooperative of fiber artists. The exhibit will be on view May 13 – July  26. \nThe public is invited to attend the opening reception on Thursday\, May 14\, from 5 to 7 pm. Admission to the museum is free. \nConceptual Threads features 60+ works by the cooperative’s four members — Ron Hodge\, Roberta (Ro) Morrissey\, Peg Weschke\, and Jody Wigton— plus four guest quilters selected by the group.  Guest quilters are Chris Lanigan\, Deborah Legiadre\, Marty Kotter\, and Candace Hackett Shively. \n“We are delighted to once again showcase these award-winning fiber artists who explore both abstract themes and personal stories through this unique art form\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions\, at the Coastal Discovery Museum. \nConceptual Threads celebrates how the artists use fabric and thread to share ideas\, emotions\, and connections that go beyond what is seen on the surface\, said Morrissey\, known for her painterly approach. “Each quilt is an invitation to experience quilts not only as works of art\, but also as conversations—between tradition and innovation\, artist and viewer\, and the threads that tie us all together.” \n

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition by The Art Beyond Tradition Group
DESCRIPTION:The Art Beyond Tradition Group was formed in 2006 by a group of Lowcountry abstract artists who sought to advance the understanding and appreciation of abstract art by mounting regular exhibitions of the artform.    \nToday the group of 11 artists continues to exhibit art that is beyond traditional visual art genres. It typically stages a large scale exhibit every two years. Its next major exhibit will be late summer through early fall at the Coastal Discovery Museum. \nThis exhibit offers a preview of the members’ work in advance of that upcoming show. The Artist’s Gallery at Town Hall is open to visitors during public meetings. For additional information email oca@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.  \nOpen during public meetings at Town Hall.

SUMMARY:This is Not: Aldwyth in Retrospect
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Coastal Discovery Museum will present an exhibition of the rarely seen works of Hilton Head-based artist Aldwyth\, from October 16 to March 23\, 2025.  The public is invited to the opening reception on October 17\, from 5-7 pm. Guest Curator Mark Sloan will give a tour of the exhibition before the reception. \n  \nThis is Not: Aldwyth in Retrospect spans nearly 70 years of her work\, including early examples of photography\, painting\, and fiber\, as well as her later bricolages and epic-scaled\, intricate collages that take viewers on a creative journey through time and space.   Although Aldwyth has lived and worked on Hilton Head since 1967\, her works have rarely been seen in the area. Her unique evolution as an artist is the subject of the documentary\, Aldwyth: Fully Assembled\, by award-winning filmmaker Olympia Stone. The Museum plans to screen the film in early 2025.

She taught art to adults for fourteen years in New York prior to moving to Hilton Head. She is currently teaching at ALHH Academy. \nARTIST STATMENT: \nI am currently teaching at ALHH Academy. I feel drawing is an essential tool for expressing your ideas. In my drawing classes\, we use man-made and natural objects as our subject matter. We also discover how line\, texture\, and form create structure on the paper’s surface. I believe if you can write your name\, you can draw! Watercolor is an extension of drawing. We just add color and some knowledge of how the medium can change the surface of the paper. I feel everyone should strive for his or her own style and be confident of one’s individual vision in order to achieve one’s own best creative self. I love art\, and I love to share my art experience with others.
