SUMMARY:Gullah Virtual Library at Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Discovering the Gullah Culture\nThe Gullah people of the Lowcountry are descendants of the enslaved Africans from West and Central Africa\, and their rich cultural legacy endures. The Gullah (sometimes called Geechee) corridor extends from North Carolina to northern Florida including both the mainland and sea islands. \nAccording to Gullah expert Dr. Emory Campbell\,* the Gullah have preserved much of their African language and cultural heritage in part due to isolated living conditions. Gullah artistic traditions such as music\, storytelling\, folktales\, crafts\, basket making or “sewing” and rice-based foods encompass strong influences from West African Cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGullah Traditions Endure\nGullah artists such as basketweavers\, dancers\, storytellers\, and singers carry on traditions brought to the Lowcountry. For example\, coiled sea grass basketry has survived in America for 300 years\, and these baskets are now recognized as an art form. Gullah spoken language\, folktales and stories as well as spirituals and gospels are passed down from generation to generation. \n\n\nThe Gullah Virtual Library\nThis Virtual Library was designed to provide educators with resources such as videos\, lessons plans\, handouts\, and digital content. These tools aid in the study of Gullah history while allowing students to experience Gullah arts and culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Emory Campbell\n*Former Penn Center Director\, former chair of the Gullah – Geechee Corridor Commission\, co-author of the new book “Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956” and a past member of the Arts Center’s Board of Trustees. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCulture and Foodways\n\n\n\nDaufuskie Island Virtual Gullah Tour with Sallie Ann Robinson\n\n\n\nGullah History and Culture Presentation\nDownload\n\n\nGullah History and Culture Study Guide\nDownload\n\n\nGullah Recipes\nDownload\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts and Traditional Crafts\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Significance of Adinkra Symbols in Gullah Art with Amiri Farris\n\n\n\n\nPreserving the Art of Sweetgrass Basket Sewing with Michael Smalls & Dino Badger\n\n\n\n\nArtist Bios Michael Smalls and Dino Badger\nDownload\n\n\nSweetgrass Word Search\nDownload\n\n\nExploring Printmaking through African Symbols and Textiles Lesson Plan\nDownload\n\n\nUnderstanding How Symbols Communicate Stories and Meaning Presentation\nDownload\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSongs and Stories\n\n\n\nGullah Tales with Anita Singleton Prather\n\n\n\nExploring Gullah Folktales through Puppetry\nDownload\n\n\nGullah Folktales Presentation\nDownload\n\n\nFolktales\nVisit Website\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistorial Sites and PLantation Life\n\n\n\nWhat Tabby Ruins Reveal about Gullah History with Dr. Emory Campbell\n\n\n\nSTEM Activity Engineering Tabby with Rice Cereal Lesson Plan\nDownload\n\n\nHilton Head Island Cultural Trail Map\nVisit Website\n\n\nTabby Slave Cabins: Tabby Demonstration\nWatch Video\n\n\nArchaeological History of Tabby\nVisit Website\n\n\nHeritage Library Presents: Our Storied Island\nVisit Website\n\n\nPenn Center\nVisit Website\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLifestyle and Community\n\n\n\nA Visit to the Gullah Museum with Storyteller Louise Miller Cohen\n\n\n\nMitchelville\nVisit Website\n\n\nOCA – Gullah Celebration Video\nWatch Video\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecommended Gullah Education Books\n\n\n \nA Sweet\, Sweet Basket\nby Margie Clary\n\n\n \nCircle Unbroken\nby Margot Raven\n\n\n \nGullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956\nby Dr. Emory Campbell\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAdditional support is provided by the Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund which is managed by Coastal Community Foundation of S.C.

SUMMARY:Poetry Trail of Hilton Head Island
DESCRIPTION:WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT\, YOU ASK?\nWell\, first\, it’s all about the poets. Did you know Hilton Head Island is packed with poets? Award-winning\, multi-published\, open mic slamming’ all-around jamming’ actual poets? Come on in! Meet us! We’ve got a trail of reading just for you. If you are here\, you have found at least one such poet. What location number was it? Where did you find it? Because whoever you found\, there are 23 more across the island! Some of the featured poets are:\nElizabeth Robin\nMiho Kinnas\nPhil Lindsey\nBarry Dickson\nLola Campbell\nSofia Segura\nBill Borg\nBill Newby\nDenise Spencer\nLuAnn Winkle\nKyle Zubatsky \nSecond\, it’s all about cool ways to see our island! The idea came about as a marriage of technology\, creative writing\, public art\, and arts-minded businesses. It’s a new way to see Hilton Head Island: through the eyes of the poets who live in the area. Confused\, wondering What is it? as you stare at the huge sculpture Carocol in Shelter Cove Park? Scan the trail sign and Elizabeth Abrams gives you one interpretation with “O’Keefe’s Woody Orchid.” It’s the kind of collaboration that makes the arts an experience.\nThird\, it’s all about collaboration! The project is a partnership between the Town of Hilton Head Island’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Island Writers’ Network. Restaurants and art shops and theaters and historic spots are involved\, and the poems just add to their stories. Here are some of our poetry hosts:\nArts Center of Coastal Carolina\nGullah Museum\nHHI Sculpture Installations\nHHSO Soundwaves\nPicture This Gallery\nRedfish\nRollers\nTio’s\n\nAnd finally\, it’s all about keeping it fresh. Every season of the year\, the poems at most stops will be switched out for others. As we said\, we’re packed with poets\, so we’ll swap out poems regularly so that you can meet all of them. Plus\, that reading trail will keep changing\, so you can visit again and again and it will always feel new.\nHow does it work? Along the trail are easy-to-find\, numbered signs containing two QR codes. One takes you to a poem written by a poet living in the area\, plus bonus information about that poet. The other takes you to the trail’s Facebook page\, where you can find the entire route. There\, you can plan a full tour\, or comment on the poem\, the art\, or the business you visited along the way. Scanning the sign allows the Office of Cultural Affairs to track traffic\, key data that helps direct new projects in our arts community.

As a teenager in Canada\, she did sketches\, colored pencil drawings\, and using a candle to melt crayons\, combined them with leaves\, moss\, and other natural objects. \nI’ve always had a passion for observing life and living things. When I was young I spent my days exploring all the nearby fields\, ponds\, and streams for the secret life and treasures that lay hidden there. I would come home with a desire to express what I had seen. Using the tools I had available to me I dabbled in mixed media before I understood the term. I was drawn to watercolor in my late teens and discovered how amazing it is to watch what this medium can do. Spending summers trekking through the meadows and peaks of the alpine country of the Canadian Rockies\, her love for nature turned into a passion for the wild places. \nThis is still expressed in her art today. As a scuba diver\, exploring the ocean with sea turtles\, stingrays\, sharks\, and giant manta rays has also been one of her favorite pastimes. After getting her degree at McGill University in teaching\, she spent 5 years with the Inuit in Arctic Canada. That time of living with the people of the far north\, became one of the most profound experiences in her life. \nJulie says she can still hear the Canadian geese as they return in the spring to nest on the tundra\, the wind as it howls across the treeless land\, the echoing sound of walking across the frozen snow & the laughter of the Inuit children. The taste of wild arctic char & bannok while we ice-fished in spring is unforgettable. The blue Hudson Bay ice reflecting into frozen sundogs\, the haunting sight of thousands of caribou in the fading arctic light & of course the mystifying dance of the multicolored northern lights overhead are memory treasures always carried in my heart. When I create art\, I do it in celebration of the joy and beauty in humanity and nature. I enjoy merging the patterns of nature with aspects of feeling\, impression\, passion\, and fantasy. \nArt for Julie is expressing the diversity\, grace\, and wonder of our humanness in relationship to the living world. She is motivated to continually reach new levels of expression through her art\, drawing the viewer into a greater awareness of their own connectedness with the living world around them. It’s important to me to create art that speaks about people and nature in an intimate way. My hope is that when people experience my art it takes them on a journey of inner healing and deeper discovery. Through my art\, I strive to uplift and encourage people to experience greater joy and love for others and for the living world that surrounds them. It’s a privilege to be able to share my passion and awe for the incredible beauty and complexity of creation. \nJulie has read extensively\, experimented with\, and taken many workshops in a variety of mediums. She’s studied under nationally & internationally known artists. Julie’s art has moved through different seasons in the 30 years since she bought her 1st set of real paints. Her painting approach has developed to a loose and freestyle\, interpreting nature sometimes using collage along with paint. \nJulie is teaching classes & workshops & is a member of the Northstar Watercolor Society & the Minnesota Watercolor Society. Her main body of work is shown at Kelley Gallery in Woodbury. She also shows her work at the Deadwood/Lead Center for the Arts in South Dakota as well as other galleries in the U.S. & Canada. \nView Julie Schroeder’s Website

SUMMARY:It's Thursday! Artists of the Round Table
DESCRIPTION:A new retrospective exhibition\, “It’s Thursday! Artists of the Round Table\,” will celebrate 15 prominent local artists who gathered weekly at The Red Piano Gallery from the 1970s through 1994 to share ideas and projects that nurtured the island’s growing art community. The exhibit will be on view through March 23\, 2026. \nThe public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday\, November 13\, from 5 to 7 pm. \nThis retrospective brings together approximately 80 works from private collections and new museum acquisitions. The Artists of the Round Table include Aldwyth\, Ralph Ballantine\, Joe Bowler\, Danielle DeMers\, Joe DeMers\, Ray Ellis\, Elizabeth Grant\, Walter Greer\, Tua Hayes\, Katy Hodgman\, Louanne LaRoche\, Allen Palmer\, Marge Parker\, George Plante\, and Coby Whitmore. \nThe museum is offering free curator’s tours of the exhibit on the following dates:\nTuesday\, December 16\, at 1 pm; Thursday\, January 22\, at 1 pm; Tuesday\, February 24\, at 11 am; and Saturday\, March 14\, at 11 am. \n“We are thrilled to present this historically significant exhibition that captures a remarkable time in Hilton Head’s art community\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions. “I would have loved to have been at their Thursday meetings and listened to these influential artists talk about their craft.” \nVisitors can see memorabilia\, photographs\, books\, and articles about the artists\, including articles by Theodore F. Wolff\, art critic for The Christian Science Monitor — a favorite of the Round Table. \nAlso on view in the gallery is the original red grand piano\, on loan from artist Louanne LaRoche\, former owner of The Red Piano Gallery\, and the round wooden table where the artists gathered on Thursday mornings. The table was donated to the museum last year. \n“At 25\, I was just a kid stepping into the world of the Round Table’s legendary artists\,” said LaRoche. “They took me under their wings\, teaching\, inspiring\, and supporting me. Their voices still echo in spirit today\, as I continue to feel and hear their thoughts challenging me to be a better artist. I am so grateful to be a part of this exhibit that can pay tribute to their legacy.”

SUMMARY:Disney FROZEN - The Broadway Musical
DESCRIPTION:Set the Magic Free\n\nIn the beautiful kingdom of Arendelle\, Princesses Anna and Elsa grow up sheltered inside their castle\, isolated from the world and increasingly distant from each other. When Elsa is crowned queen\, the magical powers she’s desperately tried to conceal from her sister take control\, and she flees to isolation\, high into a frozen mountainous landscape. As a ferocious winter descends on Arendelle\, Anna sets off on an epic journey to find Elsa and bring her home – with the help of hardworking ice harvester Kristoff\, his loyal reindeer Sven\, and a happy-go-lucky snowman named Olaf. \nBased on the Academy Award-winning animated feature film\, Frozen includes all the film’s beloved songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez\, along with new music written exclusively for the stage. Full of magic\, humor\, and a stunning musical score\, Frozen is a powerful tale of sisterhood\, acceptance\, and finding the real meaning of true love. \n‍ \nTo ensure every audience member enjoys the magic of Frozen\, we recommend this performance for children ages 5 and older. \nThis show is the full-length Broadway musical\, running about 2.5 hours. It is intended for children 5 years+ and adults. Everyone\, regardless of age\, will only be admitted with a paid ticket. \nAs customary in live theater productions\, no children in laps\, seat sharing\, or infants in carriers or arms will be permitted. Thank you! \n‍ \nDisney’s Frozen is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
