SUMMARY:Gullah Virtual Library at Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Discovering the Gullah Culture\nThe Gullah people of the Lowcountry are descendants of the enslaved Africans from West and Central Africa\, and their rich cultural legacy endures. The Gullah (sometimes called Geechee) corridor extends from North Carolina to northern Florida including both the mainland and sea islands. \nAccording to Gullah expert Dr. Emory Campbell\,* the Gullah have preserved much of their African language and cultural heritage in part due to isolated living conditions. Gullah artistic traditions such as music\, storytelling\, folktales\, crafts\, basket making or “sewing” and rice-based foods encompass strong influences from West African Cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGullah Traditions Endure\nGullah artists such as basketweavers\, dancers\, storytellers\, and singers carry on traditions brought to the Lowcountry. For example\, coiled sea grass basketry has survived in America for 300 years\, and these baskets are now recognized as an art form. Gullah spoken language\, folktales and stories as well as spirituals and gospels are passed down from generation to generation. \n\n\nThe Gullah Virtual Library\nThis Virtual Library was designed to provide educators with resources such as videos\, lessons plans\, handouts\, and digital content. Award-winning\, multi-published\, open mic slamming’ all-around jamming’ actual poets? Come on in! Meet us! We’ve got a trail of reading just for you. If you are here\, you have found at least one such poet. What location number was it? Where did you find it? Because whoever you found\, there are 23 more across the island! Some of the featured poets are:\nElizabeth Robin\nMiho Kinnas\nPhil Lindsey\nBarry Dickson\nLola Campbell\nSofia Segura\nBill Borg\nBill Newby\nDenise Spencer\nLuAnn Winkle\nKyle Zubatsky \nSecond\, it’s all about cool ways to see our island! The idea came about as a marriage of technology\, creative writing\, public art\, and arts-minded businesses. It’s a new way to see Hilton Head Island: through the eyes of the poets who live in the area. Confused\, wondering What is it? as you stare at the huge sculpture Carocol in Shelter Cove Park? Scan the trail sign and Elizabeth Abrams gives you one interpretation with “O’Keefe’s Woody Orchid.” It’s the kind of collaboration that makes the arts an experience.\nThird\, it’s all about collaboration! The project is a partnership between the Town of Hilton Head Island’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Island Writers’ Network. Restaurants and art shops and theaters and historic spots are involved\, and the poems just add to their stories. Here are some of our poetry hosts:\nArts Center of Coastal Carolina\nGullah Museum\nHHI Sculpture Installations\nHHSO Soundwaves\nPicture This Gallery\nRedfish\nRollers\nTio’s\n\nAnd finally\, it’s all about keeping it fresh. Every season of the year\, the poems at most stops will be switched out for others. As we said\, we’re packed with poets\, so we’ll swap out poems regularly so that you can meet all of them. Plus\, that reading trail will keep changing\, so you can visit again and again and it will always feel new.\nHow does it work? Along the trail are easy-to-find\, numbered signs containing two QR codes. One takes you to a poem written by a poet living in the area\, plus bonus information about that poet. The other takes you to the trail’s Facebook page\, where you can find the entire route. There\, you can plan a full tour\, or comment on the poem\, the art\, or the business you visited along the way. Scanning the sign allows the Office of Cultural Affairs to track traffic\, key data that helps direct new projects in our arts community.

SUMMARY:Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail
DESCRIPTION:Shelter Cove Sculpture Trail connects Shelter Cove Community Park and Shelter Cove Veterans’ Memorial Park to a new trailhead parking area. The trail features a temporary display of public art sculptures. Permanent and temporary sculptures incorporating Island wildlife and environmental themes are installed along the trail. Temporary pieces will be changed every 12-18 months. \nThe trail is a public pathway network along Broad Creek and Shelter Cove Lane. The pathways along Broad Creek provide spectacular views of the salt marsh. In the future\, it will be connected to the proposed Chaplin Linear Park. DESCRIPTION:The Coastal Discovery Museum\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, is presenting “Four Sketchbooks a Year: Celebrating 25 Years of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities\,” a showcase of visual arts by Beaufort County alumni\, on view through January 4\, 2026. \nFounded in 1980 by music teacher Virginia Uldrick as a five-week summer program in Greenville\, SC\, the Governor’s School opened its full-time residential high school in 1999 with 126 students and celebrated its 25th graduating class in 2025. \n“As a curator and parent of a Govie\, it’s been a joy to see such consistently strong work from students in the visual arts program\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions at the Coastal Discovery Museum. “And it’s so rewarding to see how the artists continue to grow in college and beyond.” \nParticipating artists in “Four Sketchbooks”— from the Governor’s School first class through the class of 2026—include:\nEmma Barnes (class of 2010)\, Alex Coley (class of 2024)\, Amelie Davis (class of 2025)\, Evan Ford (class of 2024)\, Alex Gentemann (class of 2021)\, Colleen Gleason (class of 2001)\, Nathaniel Greenberg (class of 2025)\, Kevin Hopkins (class of 2018)\, Tori Lusik (class of 2014)\, Luis Paredes (class of 2026)\, Jack Perry (class of 2007)\, Olivia Ruxton (class of 2005)\, Jessie Peterson Tarazi (class of 2002)\, and Wylder Voegele (class of 2020). \n“We are excited about this opportunity to showcase our program and the work of these talented Beaufort County students\,” said David Gerhard\, Visual Arts Department Chair at the Governor’s School. “These artists embody our department’s mission of giving South Carolina’s young creatives the tools and resources to flourish as artists in an environment centered around respect\, hard work\, creativity\, and connection.”

SUMMARY:It's Thursday!  Artists of the Round Table
DESCRIPTION:A new retrospective exhibition\, “It’s Thursday! Artists of the Round Table\,” will celebrate 15 prominent local artists who gathered weekly at The Red Piano Gallery from the 1970s through 1994 to share ideas and projects that nurtured the island’s growing art community. The exhibit will be on view through March 23\, 2026. \nThe public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday\, November 13\, from 5 to 7 pm. \nThis retrospective brings together approximately 80 works from private collections and new museum acquisitions. The Artists of the Round Table include Aldwyth\, Ralph Ballantine\, Joe Bowler\, Danielle DeMers\, Joe DeMers\, Ray Ellis\, Elizabeth Grant\, Walter Greer\, Tua Hayes\, Katy Hodgman\, Louanne LaRoche\, Allen Palmer\, Marge Parker\, George Plante\, and Coby Whitmore. \nThe museum is offering free curator’s tours of the exhibit on the following dates:\nTuesday\, December 16\, at 1 pm; Thursday\, January 22\, at 1 pm; Tuesday\, February 24\, at 11 am; and Saturday\, March 14\, at 11 am. \n“We are thrilled to present this historically significant exhibition that captures a remarkable time in Hilton Head’s art community\,” said Elizabeth Greenberg\, Director of Exhibitions. “I would have loved to have been at their Thursday meetings and listened to these influential artists talk about their craft.” \nVisitors can see memorabilia\, photographs\, books\, and articles about the artists\, including articles by Theodore F. Wolff\, art critic for The Christian Science Monitor — a favorite of the Round Table. \nAlso on view in the gallery is the original red grand piano\, on loan from artist Louanne LaRoche\, former owner of The Red Piano Gallery\, and the round wooden table where the artists gathered on Thursday mornings. The table was donated to the museum last year. \n“At 25\, I was just a kid stepping into the world of the Round Table’s legendary artists\,” said LaRoche. “They took me under their wings\, teaching\, inspiring\, and supporting me. Their voices still echo in spirit today\, as I continue to feel and hear their thoughts challenging me to be a better artist. I am so grateful to be a part of this exhibit that can pay tribute to their legacy.”

DESCRIPTION:3-HALF-DAYS\nSaturday to Monday (10am to 2pm)\nDecember 6\, 7\, 8\, 2025 \nExperience the exciting techniques of pouring watercolors. We’ll be using professional watercolor paper for 2 paintings\, one 22x15in. and a smaller one. Julie will demonstrate 2 different scenes. You may do the same scenes or choose any subject & colors you wish for your projects. \nWe’ll use masking fluid and other white saving techniques at the various stages of each pour to build up values in a layering process. Experiment with watercolor pencils for enhancement at various stages. \nWatercolor pouring creates glowing luminous and fluid effects unmatched by other techniques. \nHave fun\, pouring & splashing paint & be amazed by the results! \nNOTE:\nJulie will provide watercolor paper\, carbon paper\, fresh paint\, containers for mixing paint\, pipettes\, salt\, masking fluid\, plastic wrap\, waxed paper\, reference images\, the use of watercolor pencils\, watercolor pastels\, plastic palette knives\, wood boards\, a large pan to catch run off paint and a few items for textural affects for a $30 cash supply fee. DESCRIPTION:Set the Magic Free\n\nIn the beautiful kingdom of Arendelle\, Princesses Anna and Elsa grow up sheltered inside their castle\, isolated from the world and increasingly distant from each other. When Elsa is crowned queen\, the magical powers she’s desperately tried to conceal from her sister take control\, and she flees to isolation\, high into a frozen mountainous landscape. As a ferocious winter descends on Arendelle\, Anna sets off on an epic journey to find Elsa and bring her home – with the help of hardworking ice harvester Kristoff\, his loyal reindeer Sven\, and a happy-go-lucky snowman named Olaf. \nBased on the Academy Award-winning animated feature film\, Frozen includes all the film’s beloved songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez\, along with new music written exclusively for the stage. Full of magic\, humor\, and a stunning musical score\, Frozen is a powerful tale of sisterhood\, acceptance\, and finding the real meaning of true love. \n‍ \nTo ensure every audience member enjoys the magic of Frozen\, we recommend this performance for children ages 5 and older. \nThis show is the full-length Broadway musical\, running about 2.5 hours. It is intended for children 5 years+ and adults. From December 7-9th\, our beloved Holiday Nights & Lights event returns for the fifth year\, bringing with it twinkling lights and fun holiday displays. \nThe display is open nightly from Saturday\, December 6th through Monday\, December 8th\, 2025\, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park\, 40 Harriet Tubman Way\, Hilton Head Island\, South Carolina 29926. This event is for all ages\, where children and adults alike can immerse themselves in a dazzling holiday light display. \nPrepare for a magical evening at the Park—grab some hot cocoa\, tune into your favorite Christmas music channel\, and keep an eye out for surprises that might seem a bit out of place in the park! To avoid long waits\, we recommend lining up on Beach City Road beginning at 5:45 pm or at 7:30 pm. We ask for your patience with our volunteers and fellow participants. Admission is free\, but donations are warmly accepted to support our mission.
