ABOUT THE BOOK

New York Times best-selling writer Pat Conroy (1945–2016) inspired a worldwide legion of devoted fans numbering in the millions, but none are more loyal to him and more committed to sustaining his literary legacy than the many writers he nurtured over the course of his fifty-year writing life. In sharing their stories of Conroy, his fellow writers honor his memory and advance our shared understanding of his lasting impact on twentieth- and twenty-first-century literary life in and well beyond the American South.

Edited by author and artist Nicole Seitz and Pat Conroy Literary Center executive director Jonathan Haupt, Our Prince of Scribes shares the remembrances of 67 writers befriended, mentored, and championed by Conroy, crafting a vibrant, multifaceted portrait of the lifelong teacher and master storyteller. Published by the University of Georgia Press, Our Prince of Scribes has been honored with the Silver Medal for Best Regional Nonfiction in the Southeast in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, selected as winner of the International Book Award for Nonfiction Anthology, named an Okra Pick by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance, and made an official selection of the Pulpwood Queens Book Club, the largest book club in the U.S. Book sales help support the educational mission of the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center.

 ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

In the 70 days leading up to the September 18, 2018, publication of the hardcover edition of Our Prince of Scribes, co-editor Nicole Seitz sketched portraits of the 67 contributors to the anthology and of their inspiration Pat Conroy, revealing one new sketch online each day. Coupled with brief excerpts from each writer’s corresponding essay, the portraits in this exhibition honor the spirit of generosity exemplified by Pat Conroy and by the pantheon of writers who freely gave their time and remembrances to this project. The portraits exhibition is curated by Pat Conroy Literary Center executive director and anthology co-editor Jonathan Haupt and debuted at the Conroy Center in Beaufort, South Carolina, during the third annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival in November 2018. The portraits exhibition was extended through March 2019 and began touring in fall 2019.

The Our Prince of Scribes portraits exhibition will be on display from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, from September 20 to December 6 at the Artists’ Gallery at Town Hall, located in the Hilton Head Island Town Center at 1 Town Center Circle. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
