Heritage Library Online Classes

The Heritage Library will host our traditional fall ancestry and history classes in an online format using Zoom. Classes run approximately 1 hour and enrollment will be limited in order to provide ample time for questions and discussion between participants and instructors. Reservations are required and can be made at heritgelib.org. See the class schedule below and sign up today!

Once registered, on the day prior to class, participants will receive a Zoom link from heritageclasseshhi@gmail.com. Be sure to check your SPAM file If you do not see the link to your scheduled program. Instructors will provide time at the beginning of each class to test audio and video. If participants need further ZOOM instruction, please visit their support website at support.zoom.us for helpful tips and videos prior to the class.

THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: A WORLD WAR NO ONE KNOWS

The long-standing mythology of the American Revolution, American Exceptionalism and the founding of the first modern democracy is supported by the interpretation of history that American colonists of Great Britain were the first of their kind to win independence from a European empire in a war fought on their soil, virtually on their own. In this class discover how looking at the American Revolution in a broader context as a World War fought by Great Britain on four fronts with dozens of countries involved changes the narrative of our founding story.

PIECES OF YOUR PAST: A GENEALOGY PROJECT TO SHARE YOUR RESEARCH WITH CHILDREN

Looking for a fun and straightforward way to share your family story with the next generation? This step-by-step class will take participants through a sample project to learn how to share the highlights of your own family story. PREREQUISITES: basic computer skills for creating a word document (various programs work); photos and family information to use for the project; basic knowledge of Family Tree Maker is helpful. | NOTE: Examples will be done using FTM 2019 software and Word.

SHEPHERD OF THE SABLE MULTITUDE: GENERAL RUFUS SAXTON

Instructor: Rich Thomas

Examines the life and career of General Rufus Saxton, a champion of Lincoln’s original plan for Reconstruction. He was stationed on Hilton Head Island during much of the Civil War and was eventually appointed Military Governor of the Department of the South and Inspector of Settlements and Plantations under General Sherman’s special order creating the reservation for resettlement of Freedmen. Saxton’s determined struggle to resist President Johnson’s order to return confiscated land to its former owners allowed the blacks on Edisto and the other sea islands, including Hilton Head Island, to retain the lands they had purchased from the government following Emancipation.

The first session will discuss the life and actions of James and Charles Davant, Captain John Stoney, and Isaac Baldwin, and their families. What talents did they bring to the island? What did they do here? How did they live? What footprints did each of these families leave on this island?

THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY-PART 1: THE BEGINNING THROUGH THE TRIANGULAR TRADE

Explore the evolution of the slavery in different parts of the world from primitive man through the English shipment of Africans to the New World. Gather understanding of the Portuguese exportation of Africans to Brazil as a precursor to the beginning of the African trade with the West Indies and North America, along with learning about the history of the Native American slave trade.

RECONSTRUCTION ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND & BEAUFORT COUNTY (1862-1877)

In 1862 the Port Royal Experient, also known as the “Rehearsal for Reconstruction” began right here on Hilton Head Island. Join the discussion, as the class looks at the early efforts to integrate the new Freedmen into society, the Amendments that extended civil and political rights to newly freed African Americans, the gain of education, land, representation, and the brave trailblazers who led the way.

THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY-PART 2: COLONIAL DEMAND THROUGH ABOLITION

Instructor: Rich Thomas

Learn how the changing economy in the Southeastern American Colonies drove the development of the English trade in African slaves. Examine the impacts of Triangular Trade and the management and treatment of slaves on Southern Plantations. Explore the rise of the Abolitionist Movement and the path to Emancipation with special focus on the influence of events on Hilton Head Island and the Port Royal Sound area in the early 1860s.

MAXIMIZING THE DNA TOOLS AT ANCESTRY

Have you taken a DNA test through Ancestry? This class is a review of the Ancestry DNA website including Shared Matches, ThruLines, and Common Ancestors. Learn about updates on Ancestry’s website within the past year including, colors and tags to identify surname groups and how to indicate adoption, hypothesis, brick wall, and more. New search tools have been added to find and communicate with a cousin match. PREREQUISITE: This class is for people who have tested their DNA on Ancestry and have not taken one of Jan’s DNA classes before.
