He later studied music with Dr. London Branch\, Alvin Fielder\, and Andy Hardwick at Jackson State University in Jackson\, Mississippi. During his college years\, Jordan joined the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra where he served as Assistant Principal Bassist. After graduating\, he became Chair of the String Department at the Dougherty County Public School and served as Principal Bassist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra in Albany\, GA. Teaching has always been an important part of Mr. Jordan’s life and career. In addition to teaching strings in Dougherty County\, he also taught in the DeKalb County School Systems.\nDuring his years in Georgia\, Jordan served as a bass instructor at Darton College (part of the University System of Georgia) in Albany and at Georgia State University in Atlanta. While living in Atlanta\, Jordan became one of the city’s most active jazz bassists\, performing and recording with some of America’s finest jazz musicians\, including Marcus Printup\, Mulgrew Miller\, James Williams\, Milt Jackson\, George Coleman\, and Russell Gunn. He joined the faculty in the School of Music at Florida State University in Tallahassee\, FL in 2001 where he now holds a rank of Professor of Jazz Studies. Jordan teaches jazz bass\, jazz combo playing\, music education classes\, and a jazz styles class.\n\nJordan joined the Marcus Roberts Trio in 2009. It was evident during that first official performance of the newly-formed trio at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in London that Jordan thoroughly understood Roberts’ unique trio conception. Rodney Jordan is one of the most versatile jazz bassists on the scene today. His tone is rich and soulful when he plays hauntingly beautiful phrases with the bow. Just as readily\, he plays fast virtuosic passages with apparent effortless skill. DESCRIPTION:TWO CONCERTS NIGHTLY ~ 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM\n \nPianist\, composer and arranger\, Martin Lesch takes you on a “Journey Through Jazz” featuring guitarist Jackson Evans\, bassist Marc Chesanow and percussionist Chris Russell.\nMartin Lesch spent most of his young life growing up in New York City where he was raised in a musical family. He was exposed to a wide array of musical influences from a young age but always harbored a deep affection for jazz. After studying with Richard Sorce at NYU through his teens\, he graduated high school early to study at Berklee College of Music before settling back down in New York.\nLured by a ripe music scene for working players\, he transplanted to the Southeast where he currently resides on Hilton Head Island\, SC. After touring and releasing Cd’s with his own band for five years\, he took to producing\, musical directing and accompanying various regional and national acts including a long stint with singer/songwriter Angie Aparo\, for whom his work was widely acclaimed.\nAfter an encounter with one of the southeast’s iconic jazz figures\, Bob Masteller\, Lesch was hired to become a regular player at his club\, The Jazz Corner\, which has now become one of the most regarded venues for jazz musicians in the world. While doing this\, Lesch has still found time to be a featured player on various cruise lines and tours\, including a residency in China with guitarist Jackson Evans where they played their exciting brand of jazz to sold out audiences for 90 straight days.\nHe performs regularly at The Jazz Corner\, including his popular weekly Journey Through Jazz series where Lesch performs a history of jazz retrospective featuring everything from stride to modern piano technique. Bob has been a major force on the musical scene of the Low Country since 1973. In the period between ’73 and ’80\, while a Senior Vice President of The Sea Pines Company\, Bob played in a group called Jazz Reborn\, which included early Hilton Head islanders Mark Stuppy and Garry Moore\, the legendary entertainer. During this period Bob became well known in Savannah as the trombonist with The River Street Ramblers\, which included Savannah musical legends Sam Gill and Ken Palmer.\nIn the 1980’s\, Bob headed up various groups with different styles\, including New Orleans\, straight ahead jazz\, and mood music. He has appeared at virtually every mainstream location for swing and jazz in the Low Country\, including all major hotels\, Hannah’s East\, The Golden Rose\, Self Family Arts Center\, USC Performing Arts Center and the Original Old Post Office on Pope Avenue.\nIncluded in the highlights of Bob’s career\, he has performed for Presidents Clinton\, Ford and Bush and Senator Bobby Kennedy. Also in hi background was a 26-week stint at Sweet Georgia Brown in Savannah during the key moments that went into the makeup of “The Garden of Good and Evil”.\nFor the past sixteen years Masteller concentrated on his lifelong dream\, The Jazz Corner. DESCRIPTION:TWO CONCERTS NIGHTLY ~ 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM\n \nPianist\, composer and arranger\, Martin Lesch takes you on a “Journey Through Jazz” featuring guitarist Jackson Evans\, bassist Marc Chesanow and percussionist Chris Russell.\nMartin Lesch spent most of his young life growing up in New York City where he was raised in a musical family. He was exposed to a wide array of musical influences from a young age but always harbored a deep affection for jazz. After studying with Richard Sorce at NYU through his teens\, he graduated high school early to study at Berklee College of Music before settling back down in New York.\nLured by a ripe music scene for working players\, he transplanted to the Southeast where he currently resides on Hilton Head Island\, SC. After touring and releasing Cd’s with his own band for five years\, he took to producing\, musical directing and accompanying various regional and national acts including a long stint with singer/songwriter Angie Aparo\, for whom his work was widely acclaimed.\nAfter an encounter with one of the southeast’s iconic jazz figures\, Bob Masteller\, Lesch was hired to become a regular player at his club\, The Jazz Corner\, which has now become one of the most regarded venues for jazz musicians in the world. During this period Bob became well known in Savannah as the trombonist with The River Street Ramblers\, which included Savannah musical legends Sam Gill and Ken Palmer.\nIn the 1980’s\, Bob headed up various groups with different styles\, including New Orleans\, straight ahead jazz\, and mood music. He has appeared at virtually every mainstream location for swing and jazz in the Low Country\, including all major hotels\, Hannah’s East\, The Golden Rose\, Self Family Arts Center\, USC Performing Arts Center and the Original Old Post Office on Pope Avenue.\nIncluded in the highlights of Bob’s career\, he has performed for Presidents Clinton\, Ford and Bush and Senator Bobby Kennedy. Also in hi background was a 26-week stint at Sweet Georgia Brown in Savannah during the key moments that went into the makeup of “The Garden of Good and Evil”.\nFor the past sixteen years Masteller concentrated on his lifelong dream\, The Jazz Corner. After a brief stint with the Noel Freidline Quintet\, Mr. Varnes relocated to New York City to pursue a master’s degree in jazz studies at the New School. In New York\, Justin toured for six years with vocalist Phoebe Snow\, with whom he performed on the Roseanne Barr Show\, as well as National Public Radio’s “World Cafe” (he would later perform on “World Cafe” with pop group “Five for Fighting”). He also performed with Phoebe at Madison Square Garden\, where he played alongside singers Jewel and Paula Cole.\nMr. Varnes has performed with several jazz greats in New York\, including: Ben Wolfe (Harry Connick\, Jr.)\, Aaron Goldberg (Joshua Redman)\, Wessell Anderson\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Marcus Printup\, Steve Kirby (Cyrus Chestnut)\, Peter Bernstein\, and Eric Lewis (Wynton Marsalis).\nCurrently residing in Atlanta\, Mr. Varnes performs regularly with the Christian Tamburr Quartet\, as well as Bob Reynolds\, Kevin Bales\, Joe Gransden and Gary Motley. Justin is also a top call sideman for touring artists through Atlanta. Nicki switched to double bass at the age of 15.\nAfter graduating high school she moved to Sydney to study jazz at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music where she began to play with Australian musicians such as Mike Nock\, Dale Barlow\, Paul Grabowsky\, Bernie McGann\, and Ten Part Invention. She also toured Australia with Russian musicians Daniel Kramer and Alexander Fischer and American trumpeters Bobby Shew and Chuck Findley. She continued her studies with various bassists including visiting artists Ray Brown and John Clayton.\nNicki was the recipient of two awards\, a scholarship to Pan Pacific Music Camps at the age of 16\, and first place in the 1992 Jazz Action Society’s Annual Song Competition for her composition “Come and Get It\,” which is the opening track of Nicki and her sister Lisa’s debut CD\, “Awabakal Suite”. She was also nominated for the annual Australian Young Achievers Award by the Arts Council of Australia who granted her the funds to come to New York to study with Rufus Reid. Nicki came to New York in May 1994.\nIn June 2000\, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with the legendary guitarist and inventor\, Les Paul. Please contact us to discuss how she might help enrich your program.\n \nTaylor Roberts ~\nSince the age of four\, music has been the most important thing in Taylor Roberts’ life\, for it was then that he met and fell in love with a piano. The mysterious instrument produced the most amazing sounds with the simple press of a key. Though he had been on the planet for a mere four years\, his young heart knew that he simply had to master this instrument\, and so it was quickly arranged for him to study privately with a teacher at home. Nine years of lessons and joyfully picking out songs from records to play on the piano went by\, and at the age of thirteen Taylor got his first guitar. Though he would always admire the piano\, and would remember fondly the many hours they spent together\, it was clear to him that he had finally found the instrument of his dreams. He made the firm decision to make the guitar his primary focus.\nBorn and raised in Gainesville\, Florida\, Taylor found himself in an ideal location for his budding musical career. The supportive local music scene (and his parents) allowed him to play in various bands throughout high school\, with sounds ranging from punk and ska to rock and blues. For Taylor\, as for so many of us\, music was an oasis throughout the tumultuous teenage years. At the age of sixteen\, however\, he was swept up to entirely new musical heights\, rich with emotion and storytelling and…explosions! Yes\, he had discovered Jazz. Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Wes Montgomery…An entirely new world had opened up!\nAfter surviving high school\, Taylor took his diploma and his newly refined focus\, and began pursuing a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Being able to study with the internationally-renowned faculty and honing his craft was a dream come true. Today\, Taylor has made music performance and teaching his full-time job\, and has become very well-respected among his peers. Multiple performances at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival and the Gainesville Jazz Festival\, active membership in the Ritz Jazz Orchestra\, and thousands of gigs at clubs\, restaurants and private events throughout the Southeast have helped to build his reputation\, professionally and musically.\nIn 2008\, he released a solo guitar album entitled “Short Story\,” currently available on iTunes. The praise and recognition he received for the recording has helped to make him a “first call” in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas for solo guitar work. Additionally\, he was afforded the opportunity in 2009 to travel to Japan\, Russia\, and the Dutch Harbor performing with the Christian Tamburr Quintet. Nicki switched to double bass at the age of 15.\nAfter graduating high school she moved to Sydney to study jazz at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music where she began to play with Australian musicians such as Mike Nock\, Dale Barlow\, Paul Grabowsky\, Bernie McGann\, and Ten Part Invention. She also toured Australia with Russian musicians Daniel Kramer and Alexander Fischer and American trumpeters Bobby Shew and Chuck Findley. She continued her studies with various bassists including visiting artists Ray Brown and John Clayton.\nNicki was the recipient of two awards\, a scholarship to Pan Pacific Music Camps at the age of 16\, and first place in the 1992 Jazz Action Society’s Annual Song Competition for her composition “Come and Get It\,” which is the opening track of Nicki and her sister Lisa’s debut CD\, “Awabakal Suite”. She was also nominated for the annual Australian Young Achievers Award by the Arts Council of Australia who granted her the funds to come to New York to study with Rufus Reid. Nicki came to New York in May 1994.\nIn June 2000\, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with the legendary guitarist and inventor\, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio\, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney\, Slash\, Steve Miller to fellow Aussie\, Tommy Emmanuel.\nSince then she has performed with such notable musicians as Michel Legrand\, Joe Wilder\, Randy Brecker\, Clark Terry\, Jose Feliciano\, Bucky Pizzarelli\, John Pizzarelli\, Dick Hyman\, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra\, Harry Allen\, Marlena Shaw\, David Krakauer\, Ken Peplowski\, Ann Hampton Callaway\, Bill Mays\, Scott Hamilton\, Lillian Boutte\, Larry Carlton and Houston Person\, just to name a few.\nNicki has also performed in several Broadway shows such as Avenue Q\, Imaginary Friends\, You’re a Good Man\, Charlie Brown\, Summer of ’42 and Jekyll and Hyde and has made several television and documentary appearances including The Gossip Girls\, Chasing Sound and Thank You Les\, which recently debuted on PBS.\nIn 2007 and 2008\, Nicki received back to back honors for Swing Journal’s Best Jazz Vocal Album (Moon River and Fly Me to The Moon\, respectively).\nIn 2010 her album Black Coffee (Venus) received Swing Journal’s Gold Disc award.\nIn 2012\, Nicki headlined the Fujitsu Concorde Jazz festival after the release of her eighth CD from Venus Records\, Sakura Sakura. Please contact us to discuss how she might help enrich your program.\n \nTaylor Roberts ~\nSince the age of four\, music has been the most important thing in Taylor Roberts’ life\, for it was then that he met and fell in love with a piano. The mysterious instrument produced the most amazing sounds with the simple press of a key. Though he had been on the planet for a mere four years\, his young heart knew that he simply had to master this instrument\, and so it was quickly arranged for him to study privately with a teacher at home. Nine years of lessons and joyfully picking out songs from records to play on the piano went by\, and at the age of thirteen Taylor got his first guitar. Though he would always admire the piano\, and would remember fondly the many hours they spent together\, it was clear to him that he had finally found the instrument of his dreams. He made the firm decision to make the guitar his primary focus.\nBorn and raised in Gainesville\, Florida\, Taylor found himself in an ideal location for his budding musical career. The supportive local music scene (and his parents) allowed him to play in various bands throughout high school\, with sounds ranging from punk and ska to rock and blues. For Taylor\, as for so many of us\, music was an oasis throughout the tumultuous teenage years. At the age of sixteen\, however\, he was swept up to entirely new musical heights\, rich with emotion and storytelling and…explosions! Yes\, he had discovered Jazz. Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Wes Montgomery…An entirely new world had opened up!\nAfter surviving high school\, Taylor took his diploma and his newly refined focus\, and began pursuing a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Being able to study with the internationally-renowned faculty and honing his craft was a dream come true. Today\, Taylor has made music performance and teaching his full-time job\, and has become very well-respected among his peers. Multiple performances at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival and the Gainesville Jazz Festival\, active membership in the Ritz Jazz Orchestra\, and thousands of gigs at clubs\, restaurants and private events throughout the Southeast have helped to build his reputation\, professionally and musically.\nIn 2008\, he released a solo guitar album entitled “Short Story\,” currently available on iTunes. The praise and recognition he received for the recording has helped to make him a “first call” in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas for solo guitar work. Additionally\, he was afforded the opportunity in 2009 to travel to Japan\, Russia\, and the Dutch Harbor performing with the Christian Tamburr Quintet. Other household names he’s performed with include Bucky Pizzarelli\, Linda Cole\, Gary Foster\, Sal Lozano\, Kevin Bales\, Tim Hagans\, Jon Weber\, Toscha Comeaux\, and Rene Marie. DESCRIPTION:16 year old violinist Caroline Smoak\, will perform several classical works\, with pianist Emily Ubanek. Caroline is a student of Dr. Carolyn Huebl\, at Vanderbilt University (pre-college). Caroline was the 2016 and 2018 Peter Perret Competition winner\, soloing with the Winston Salem Symphony twice. She recently won the Curb Competition and will solo with the Nashville Symphony. Caroline was selected as a finalist in the Hilton Head Symphony Youth Concerto Competition four times\, medaling twice. The past four summers\, Caroline has attended Perlman Music Program in Long Island\, NY\, studying with Itzhak Perlman and his staff. The event will be streamed. DESCRIPTION:TWO CONCERTS NIGHTLY ~ 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM\n \nDeas Guyz features an entertaining mix of Old Motown\, Rhythm and Blues\, Pop\, Rock\, Reggae and Dance beats. The range of musical selections includes Motown sounds of the Temptations\, The Drifters\, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye; Bob Marley classics; the Lover’s Rock style of Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown; to the Hip-Hop sounds of Lauren Hill and R. Kelly.\nThe band officially formed in January 2000 (as Nu World Beat) and each member adds a rich and experienced musical background to the mix. The artists bring many years of prior experience performing professionally in other bands\, at clubs\, colleges\, and at various festivals and private functions.\nThe band currently performs regularly on Hilton Head Island\, SC\, at The Jazz Corner most Sunday nights. They often travel to other locations such as Pawley’s Island\, Newberry\, Mount Pleasant and Greenville in South Carolina and have ventured to several hot spots in Georgia as well.
