The Heritage Library is excited to begin offering ancestry and history classes on-line. Below is a list of currently scheduled classes.

Reservations are required and can be made at heritagelib.org. Class size is limited to provide for questions and discussion. An email link for your class session will be sent by email the day before the scheduled class you have registered for.

This is a new adventure for the Library and our team of instructors and we will be using the ZOOM platform. There will be time at the beginning of each class to test your audio and video. If you are not familiar with ZOOM, please check out their website and review their tutorial information.

We will be adding classes to the schedule throughout the summer and into fall so be sure and check the website regularly. http://www.heritagelib.org

MAXIMIZING THE DNA TOOLS AT ANCESTRY

Thursday, July 9, 2020, 11:00 AM – 12:00 NOON

Instructor: Jan Alpert

This class is a review of the Ancestry DNA website including Shared Matches, ThruLines, and Common Ancestors. Within the last year Ancestry has added colors and tags to identify surname groups and indicate adoption, hypothesis, brick wall, and more. New search tools have been added to find and communicate with a cousin match. This class is for people who have tested their DNA on Ancestry and have not taken Jan’s DNA classes before.

This class is a review of review the FamilyTreeDNA website for Autosomal DNA including In-Common cousins, Paternal and Maternal groups, messaging your matches, and using the Chromosome Browser. This class does not include Y DNA which will be another class. This class is for people who have tested their DNA on FamilyTreeDNA and have not taken Jan’s DNA classes before.

FAMILY TREE MAKER PART 2: GETTING STARTED: PEOPLE AND MEDIA TABS

Monday, July 27, 2020 1:30 – 2:30 PM

Now it’s time to add people; set relationships; add and categorize media; set profile pictures; link media to several people at once; back up your files and more. This class gets you started on the process of documenting your family history in this software.

MAXIMIZING THE DNA TOOLS AT 23andMe

This class will review the 23andme results for Autosomal DNA including cousin relationships, the chromosome browser, and genetic testing for some genetic diseases which have been approved by the FDA. This class is for people who have tested their DNA on 23andme and have not taken Jan’s DNA classes before.

FAMILY TREE MAKER PART 3: INTRODUCING THE WEB SEARCH AND PLACES TABS

Monday, August 3, 2020, 1:30 – 2:30 PM

Instructor: Carol Clemens

Follow your ancestors through maps; search web sites through Family Tree Maker, add favorite search sites; and add information directly to your tree. This is the next step toward creating a finished product.

WHY MyHeritage IS MY FAVORITE DNA TESTING COMPANY

Tuesday, August 4, 2020, 11:00 AM – 12:00 NOON

Instructor: Jan Alpert

Jan will review the MyHeritage website for Autosomal DNA including DNA matches, Auto Clusters, Theory of Relativity, and Triangulation using the Chromosome Browser. Jan has chosen to give this class last in this series because you can upload a copy of your DNA from another DNA testing company (such as Ancestry) to MyHeritage and take advantage of the additional tools at MyHeritage. This class is for people who have tested their DNA on MyHeritage and have not taken Jan’s DNA classes before.

DNA PAINTER

Saturday, August 8, 2020 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Instructor: Jan Alpert

Learn how to take your DNA results from Family TreeDNA, 23andme, or MyHeritage to map segments of your chromosones by ancestor or ancestral couple. Ancestry is not included in this class because they do not provide a Chromosome Browser with segment data. If you have tested your DNA with any of the three companies (Family TreeDNA, 23andme or MyHeritage) and have identified at least 20 common ancestors you share with cousin matches, then this class is for you. This is an advanced class.

FAMILY TREE MAKER PART 4: CREATING A FINAL PROJECT: FIND AND FIX ERRORS, GET STARTED WITH THE PUBLISH TAB

Monday, August 10, 2020 1:30 – 2:30 PM

Instructor: Carol Clemens

Now it is time to create a final project so we will be exploring: how can I find and fix duplicate information and errors; what reports can be created; how can I share my work; and how can I create a book? This is the last step in the process and you will be amazed at what you can create and share.
